Alyson Rod and Her Fight Against Cancer "Spike For A Cause Moanalua vs Iolani"

Alyson Rod who teaches at Moanalua High School grades 9-12, was diagnosed with stomach cancer this past summer. She said they found a tumor and had her stomach removed, and just started chemotherapy a month ago.

"This isn't the first time, when I was 11 years old in elementary school, I had bone cancer in my knees, but that was completely a different type of cancer and went through a lot of chemotherapy and surgery. The one on my knee was called Osteosarcoma, that was in 2002 and it hasn't come back. This stomach cancer is a new one and an unrelated cancer."

I asked Alyson how she's dealing with this. She replied, "I'm just taking this one day at a time. I'm not trying to think too hard about it. I have a lot of support from my family and supporters so that's kinda helping me deal with it."

"As for our Moanalua girls volleyball and their support, the one surprising thing is knowing how so many people want to help and show that they're there for you. I guess the girls volleyball team is doing this as a way to help support and show that they're there for me."

"In closing, I'm so moved that they want to do this for me and it's really overwhelming that these people I know and strangers are out there wanting to help out."

On Thursday, September 25, 2014, there will be a special event for Alyson Rod at the Moanalua High School Gym, "Spike For A Cause" rallying together to beat cancer.  Moanalua vs Iolani at 5:00 PM. Entrance Fee $5.00 Shirts $10.00. C'mon down and help support a great cause.  Video "click here."

2104 Pre-Season Girls Soccer Games at Waipio Soccer Complex, Waipahu HI.

The start of a Pre-season Girls Soccer Game between Moanalua Na Menehune and the Kahuku Red Raiders was held at the Waipio Soccer Complex in Waipahu, Hawaii.  Moanalua Na Menehune Head Coach Nikki Dela Pena related this year squad is much smaller than we're used to but our squad still has a lot experienced players.  This year we have 9 seniors, we're not done with our trails yet and still looking at some freshman with potential to add to this team.

We definitely do have experience, and at least when we look at our bench, everyone is able to play and they all are returnees.  Today's game is still in pre-season, although it's good to utilize this scrimmage today because we're going to end up playing Kahuku this season and they're usually one of our head to head competitors in the East side.  For photo's and video "click here."

Honolulu International Airport "2014 Triennial Aircraft Disaster Exercise"

Today at the Honolulu International Airport there was an explosion and an aircraft down, but this was all an exercise.
The FAA requires a full scale demonstration of the emergency plan every three years of those airports certified under 14 CFR part 139.  This excerpt of FAA Advisory Circular 150/5200-31A (e) states:

Full Scale Exercise - The full scale exercise is the most comprehensive test and is intended to evaluate the operation capability of the emergency management system in a stress environment with actual mobilization and response capability.  It uses all the resources and requires reaction from equipment and personnel that would normally be available if the exercise were an actual emergency.  The FAA requires a full scale demonstration of the emergency plan every three years of those airports certified under 14 CFR part 139.

The full scale demonstration requires a simulated emergency, as it would in an actual aircraft disaster, for full certificated airports commensurate with the index of the airport, to ensure that all personnel having duties and responsibilities under the plan are familiar with assignments and are properly trained. LVSSA / SSUSA World Master Championship Las Vegas Nevada Men's 60+ AA Division

506 Teams participated in the 2014 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championship held at - Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada.  The age groups were from the Men's and Women's 40's to Men's 85 AAA. There are several Softball Complexes where the games are held.  I followed three of our local teams, "Fresh Poke" from Maui with 3 players from Kauai, "Makua Alii" from Oahu and "Family Stones (photo above) 60's" participating in the Mens 60+ AA Division.

I spoke to one of the the Team Manager, "Fresh Poke" Mark Daniels from Maui about this year's 2014 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championship, he said "most of us are from Maui and have played together for a while, we have been back and forth to these tournaments within the last 10 years.  Four times we have come in 2nd place, but we're hanging in there."

"Last year we didn't do that hot, but we're back here one more time to see how it works out.  Most of my players are from Maui, three are from Kauai and one from Oahu.  Most are from Maui.  We all know each other for years and we just got together came up here to come and play.  So far we have been hanging in there and this year, hopefully we can win it.  Our team in Maui won the 2014 Tournament, so right now we're just trying to carry over and go from there." HFD Helicopter Lands on Moanalua High School Baseball Field, Why? Unknown.

What a surprise at Moanalua High School GIrls Volleyball game on Wednesday, September 10, 2014.  All the spectators were taking a break after the JV Girls Volleyball vs. Roosevelt game while the Varsity team was warming up when all of a sudden you could hear a loud roaring sound coming from the south side of the gym.  The next thing you know, a dirt storm and dust blew in through the gym's vents and louvers that filled the gym and covered the bleachers and spectators. Some of the spectators ran out of the gym, and others were just mystified about what the heck was going on.

Outside on the south side of the gym approximately 50 feet from the gym was a HFD helicopter that landed (photo above) on or about 7:47pm on the baseball field.  It stirred up dirt, debris and dust into the gym and created a mess.  The OC16 crew also happened to be in attendance doing a live broadcast.  No one had any idea as to why the HFD helicopter landed. A source from the Honolulu International Airport (TWR) reported no record of any helicopter landing at Moanalua High School.

I was told that Athletic Director Mr. Joel Kawachi related that the baseball field is in the process of having a sprinkler system installed and grass planted on the outfield. Cinders, a necessity for the playing surface on the infield was blown into areas where it shouldn't be, not to mention a great deal of dirt was kicked up.  That evening, the court had to be mopped for safety of the players which delayed the game. In addition, the entire gym will have to have a Hiclean of the gym floors, bleachers, basketball backboards, banners, scoreboards and other flat surfaces. Video "click here."

2014 AAU West Coast "CHAMPIONS" The Eastsidaz Girls Basketball Team

Asked how this all got started, basketball Head Coach Simon Bitanga from Kaiser High School recalls it all started back in 2000 with only 10 girls along with his eldest daughter Keely Bitanga. "It went on for about two years and a whole bunch of siblings and little girls from Hawaii-Kai watched us play for the championship semi-finals and the championship, both vs. Texas in the MJB Tournament and we beat both of them.  After the game the girls were interested in playing and I told them come show up on Monday and the rest is history and now I have over two hundred girls from ages 5-18 and keeps growing."
In 2007 Bitanga recalls taking National Champs girls 12 and under with his youngest daughter Micaela Bitanga, Kiana Naki, Klien Masutani, Lia Galderia, Dawnyelle Awa from Kona, Celeste Tsutahara, Taryn Achong, Megan Kinoshita, and Ciera Pacheco.  "It was a great accomplishment for us just to win a National Championship from Hawaii and won a total of 12 in different age groups that same year."
As for this year, Coach Bitanga's expectation is always to win.  "But we'll always be out sized, out matched, but our girls never give up. We pressure about the whole game and that's our bread and butter and if we can do that and be successful with that, then we always got a shot and today in Las Vegas, his 8th Graders pulled through even though they were behind by 15 points (chicken skin to the max), but with the "soft spoken" coach Simon, his encouragement must have made a difference by taking the 2014 AAU West Coast National "Champions," followed by his JV 2nd Place, Varsity 4th Place, 5th and 7th Consolation Champs.  As for the JOI Las Vegas Classic, Varsity took the Championship, followed by 10th 2nd Place, 8th 3rd Place and 5th 3rd Place.

I'll be adding more information from Las Vegas. They now head into their 2nd tournament in Las Vegas, "Jam On It Grand Finale," July 22-24.   To check out the game video "click here" and game photos, "click here".

As I covered their games this season, they are not only the "champs," but played as a team, believed in one another, showed self determination and confidence in themselves to take it all the way tonight even when they were down in the 3rd set and came firing back to take the championship. Moanalua Na Menehune 2014 New Football Head Coach Jason Cauley

Jason Cauley Moanalua Na Menehune New Head Football Coach and
Former Kapolei Offensive Coordinator

This afternoon I ran into Moanalua Na Menehune new head football coach Jason Cauley and former offensive coordinator under the former legendary head coach Arnold Martinez.  I asked coach Cauley how it felt to be back and he said it's absolutely amazing.  "I continued to keep in touch with all the people and the kids and those that graduated and I can't explain the feelings to be back, and blessed to be back in a great place like Moanalua High School."

I also asked coach Cauley about his plans for this year's Moanalua Football team, and I hear he's looking into a running team.  At Kapolei his offensive team could either run or throw the ball, but it depends on your personnel and what you have.  "We had the bigger guys and bigger running backs so we could run the ball."

"This week and next week we'll see what we have on the field and if we have someone that can throw the ball, of course I would like to be a balanced offense more than anything.  If we have to run the ball then we'll run the ball, if we have to throw the ball then we'll throw the ball.  We'll do what we have to do to win ball games."

2014 OIA High School Golf Tournament #3 at Makalena Golf Course

Spring sports have started for Varsity baseball, golf, judo, softball, tennis, track & field, boys volleyball and water polo here in Hawaii.  The weather hasn't been very cooperative these past few weeks, but it hasn't dampened the spirit of our young talented high school kids, as I've seen on the golf course for one.  It's hard to cover all the sports, so I decided to cover the 2014 OIA High School Boys & Girls Golf Tournament.

I must say that we have great talent among our high schools and as always, Moanalua High School keeps churning out the talent, like John Oda who finished second at last year's State Championship.  This year, Moanalua's team led by Head Coach Gordon Yuen consists of 6 boys and 2 girls including Brent Grant who shot a 66 at the OIA Golf Tournament held at the Makalena Golf Course followed by Kyosuke Hara 67; Desmond Mello 71; Shawn Lu 72; Kenneth Won 76; and Nick Nelson 78.  The girls are Lesa Isabella (photo above) who shot 75, and Randi Kim 80.  It will be a very interesting year for all to watch, keep your eyes on the Moanalua Na Menehunes.

The OIA Championship this year will be held at Turtle Bay on April 22-23 and the HHSAA Championship for the Girls on April 29-30; the Boys on May 1-2.  For candid photos "click here." OIA results "click here"

McKinley Tiger #24, Dayton Lee attempted to break the tie with 12 seconds left, but failed and the game went into overtime.

HAWAII GIRL BRINGING ALOHA TO WALLACE STATE JUNIOR COLLEGE

Today, January 15, 2014 at Moanalua High School Student Center, Senior Leisha Yamaguchi signed with Wallace State Junior College located in Hanceville, Alabama in present of her parents Jack and Linda Yamaguchi and Head Softball Coach/PE Instructor Jayne Clem (photo above) .

The Wallace State fast pitch softball is a national champion on the field and in the classroom. Wallace State softball won its second National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCCA) Division 1 National Championship during the 2013 season, adding to the first crown the program won in 2008. The Lady Lions were also national runner-up on two other occasions (2009 and 2010) and third in 2012.

As for Leisha Yamaguchi recognition to the Wallace State Junior College, I spoke to Coach Elaine Covin who retired from Alabama Southern Community College and she related Coach Clem and her were working a softball show case back in October in Las Vegas and just so happen Leisha was playing on a team that I coached and I was so impressed with Leisha that I made sure that she meet coach Clem and they got to know each other and here we are today in Hawaii.

I spoke to Leisha Yamaguchi's Moanalua Softball Head Coach, Kristi Morikawa and she related that Leisha has grown from a shy underclassman to a powerful and confident pitcher, one of the best in the state. Her hard work and dedication will carry her far in her career. Kristie said it has been a pleasure to coach her and we wish her the best. Moanalua Bowling Head Coach, Geri Mehrtens also related that Leisha joined the team in her sophomore year.  She earned the Scholar Girl Bowler in 2013 and will be a deserving recipient of the Most Inspirational Girl Bowler in 2014.  Leisha is reliable, focused, and always tries her utmost.  Statistically she did not have the highest average on the team, but could be counted on to wholly support the team on and off the lanes. DEFENSE WAS THE NAME OF THE GAME BETWEEN MOANALUA & ROOSEVELT

Tonight was the ice breaker between the Roosevelt Rough Riders (photo above) and Moanalua Na Menehune who are tied at 8-0, followed by Kailua 6-3, Kaiser 5-3, Kahuku 3-5, McKinley 2-6 and Kaimuki 0-9 in the OIA Red East Girls Basketball. As for the Division 1 overall 2013-2014 Girls Basketball statistics, Jasmine Moody of Radford is in first place followed by Taufau Williams of Kailua, LaChae McColor of Moanalua, Valerie Wilson of Kaimuki and Sarah Liva of Mililani.

The Roosevelt Rough Riders with their strong defense took the lead in the first period 24-8, and their three on one fast breaks and ball control continued to end the half at 34-16. No need to say more, but the Roosevelt Rough Riders fans, family and supporters were heard cheering all the way to Makiki as their team dominated the court at Moanalua High School Gym with #11 Sharice Kawakami (photo below) with 14points, followed by #24 Devyn Kauhi with 13 points

For the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity Girls, it was Senior Night, and they were looking for a win in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division. In the second half they seemed to regroup and this time the cheering came from the Na Menehune supporters as they tried to close the gap in the 3rd period 35-50. Going into the 4th period they gave the Rough Riders a run for their money by keeping it within 10 points, but in the end Roosevelt's defense prevailed and ended the game 59-51.  More story and stats "click here" More candid photos "click here." Not all photos are uploaded. Please c'mon back Saturday, January 11, 2014.
