'Winter Wonderland" at Kahala Mall with the "Ka Hale I O Kahala Halau Hula"

"Winter Wonderland" was indeed an enjoyment today at Kahala Mall center stage. Even though there was no snow, the atmosphere was festive and everyone enjoyed the show put on by the "Ka Hale I O Kahala Halau Hula. The halau was lead by Kumu Hula Leimomi I. Maldonado, but everyone knows her as "Aunty Lei." If you want to see their performance, you can catch them at Kahala Mall every year during the Christmas season. Aunty Lei's love for hula goes back to her keiki days. She was inspired by her late Kumu Hula, Aunty Maiki Aiu Lake, and she continued to study and eventually graduated as a Kumu Hula. Her mentor has been her brother Milton who has stood behind her through thick and thin.

Today's performance by the Ka Hale I O Kahala Halau was something to see. You could see the excitement and joy on the faces of the keiki and adult hula dancers. Their smiles had enough energy to light up that huge christmas tree behind them. All I can say is, there is nothing like Christmas in Hawaii, because no other place has that same home town feeling. "Shop with a Cop" The Spirit of Aloha at Walmart on December 11, 2010

If you see a bunch of police vehicles at the Keeaumoku Street Walmart on Saturday morning around 6:00am, "no" our Honolulu Police Department has not moved or taken over Walmart. It is the "Shop With A Cop" program that sets the tone for the Christmas season. It is a very cool experience for our police officers, especially when you see the smiles on the faces of the children. It is such a good feeling, and the children see our officers in a positive way.

I was told that this program started in 1989 with the help of Ron Dunn, Chief Deputy with the Blount County Sheriff's Office, Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp and Bud Allison, the father of the F.O.P. (Fraternal Order of Police). This event would not be possible without the tremendous and generous support of our Honolulu Police Department D-1 Community Policing Team, Sergeant Lawrence Santos, Officer Richard Fikani, Officer Kevin Nakano, Officer Don Faumuina and Officer Taylor Hoopii, and the people of Hawaii, organizations and volunteers who donate not only their time, but money, gifts and the spirit of "Aloha." I would also like to recognize the following officers who attended and assisted a child in this event: Deputy Chief Delbert Tatsuyama, Larry Santos, Cleo Millare, Reginald DeGuiar, Val Huihui, Ron Richardson, Jonathan Almodova, Marie McCauley, William Axt, Eric Fong, Benjamin Mahi, Pamela Liu, Karl Steininger, Eric Lalau, Ronald Pinho-Goldman, Sanford Yue, Clesson Werner, Hilarion Oliva, and Julianne Kusuda.

Today's event started with Santa arriving in a police cruiser being greeted by children singing Christmas Carols and waving to Santa as he pulled up to wish everyone a "Merry Christmas." Police Chief Louis Kealoha was also there to greet Santa (John Shaw) along with Kapua Tani (photo above), coordinator of the H-5, "Hawaii Helping the Hungry Have Hope" and Executive Director Utu Langi.

Walmart has been the host of "Shop with a Cop" for the past 5 years. I can see why this event brings out the joy in our children. There are no words to express what I experienced this morning, you had to be there to feel the love, joy and happiness of these kids. When I spoke to the kids as they were shopping, they were speechless and just told me how happy they were and very thankful for all the "aloha" given to them. Santa's helper this year is "Hokulani." (photo above) His owner is Mr. Norman Dang. "Click here" to see today's event photos.

"Moanalua JV Basketball Starts the Season with a Surprise Attack over Roosevelt 62-23

What a night as the Moanalua Na Menehune took on the Roosevelt Rough Riders at Moanalua gym. It was a December 7th surprise attack that I believe the Rough Riders didn't expect. The Na Menehune JV zipped past the Rough Rider defense to continue their attack up and down the court and didn't miss a step. They were fired up from the start with Na Menehune #55 (photo above), Austin Failauga who led with 7 points and #21, Preston Armbrust with 6 points to end the first half 26-16. In the second half, aerial attacks kept coming from all sides with a lot of determination by the Na Menehune who defeated the Rough Riders 62-23. High scorers were #55, Austin Failauga with 13 points and #24, Justin Hudcovoc with 8 points. See JV action photos, "click here."

As for the Na Menehune Varsity team, it was a very disappointing game against the Rough Riders. They had a lot of opportunities to score, but just couldn't connect. The crowd on both sides were 100% into the game and it sounded like the house was rocking because the shouting and yelling was so loud. The support of friends and families was awesome! At half time, the score was tied, 27-27. The second half was an uphill battle for the Na Menehune, and penalties didn't help them, especially when they needed those crucial points towards the end of the game. It was close all the way to the end, with a score of 50-50 taking the game into overtime. The Rough Riders finally took the lead to win it 58-55. Congratulations to all the coaches and players in tonight's first game of the basketball season. See Varsity action photos, "click here." C'mon back, more photos will be added.

Janice Lee "Jazzercise" 10th Year Anniversary Celebration "Happy Holidays"

"Tis the Season" to be jolly...... as you can see, the guy in the orange shirt is already "jolly" and actually Santa in disguise. Just kidding, he's Thomas Toyozaki going through his weekly jazzercise classes preparing for his deliveries on Christmas day. Tommy (Santa) related that he should be good to go on Christmas day.

Last month, Janice Lee, (photo top left) and her students celebrated her Jazzercise Downtown and Nuuanu 10th Anniversary on Saturday November 6, 2010 at the Natsunoya Tea House. Thomas Toyozaki, Director of Security at Ala Moana Shopping Center and long time friend was the host for that evening. In the photo above, he is presenting a custom photo album made especially for Janice in celebration of her 10th anniversary. Up to today, they are both still trying to get me to join. If you don't know, or never heard of Jazzercise, it is a 60-minute class of cardio, strength, and stretch moves for a total body workout. My excuse is, if I join, I might have a total body "brokeout" and wouldn't be able to continue my sports reporting and events except by sitting down.

Just a little something about Janice. Janice Emi Yamaguchi was born and raised in Hawaii and attended Castle High School. After completing high school, she went to Kapiolani Community College for two years and then attended UH Manoa where she graduated with a BS in Human Development. Janice currently works at Kaiser Permanente as the administrative assistant to Chief of the OB-GYN Department. As for "Jazzercise," Janice got involved because she felt that she was "overweight." She tried jogging and hated it! One day her neighbor told her she had a niece who was Jazzercising, so she decided to join the crowd. At that moment, her life changed. After 7 years as a student at the Kaneohe Jazzercise, she just felt she couldn't get enough of it and decided to pursue her certification to become an instructor. And here we are today, 10 years later. As for teaching the class, she said "I think there's a personal satisfaction when I know people are having fun, or smiling or they're getting something out of it." Interested in taking classes? You may reach Janice at janicelee@hawaii.rr.com. To see her celebration party photos, "click here".

"Lokahi Day" at Ala Moana Center Stage with Jai Cunningham and Olena Heu

Today, The Lokahi Giving Project is being held at the Ala Moana Shopping Center, Center Stage. Among some of the musical entertainment are groups such as Imua, Manoa DND, Page Academy of Dance, Henry Kapono, Maunalua, Tau's Y2 and Tunui's Royal Polynesians. What better way to spend a Saturday than with family and friends. Jai Cunningham and Olena Hue (top photo) are hosting the event and encouraging our local people and shoppers to help families in need of a helping hand during these hard times, especially during Christmas. Lokahi means "Unity" and is a time we should all unite to help those in need by donating goods or cash. I was told that the Lokahi project is a partnership between KHON2 and the non-profit organization Keiki O Ka Aina family learning center.

There are many volunteers for the Lokahi Caring Project and they can be seen throughout the mall, as seen to your right. Great job girls. The event is being held between 10:00am to 4:00pm, so come down and show your "Aloha" and support for this worthy cause. The season of giving has begun! Checks and cash donations can also be taken to any First Hawaiian Bank statewide, and you many also drop off items to Price Busters, Hawaii Self Storage, A-American self storage and Wet'n Wild Hawaii or click here. Have a Happy Holiday, drive safe and spread the spirit of Aloha!

Hawaii Big Boyz Youth Tackle Football League February 2011

Father (Coach) John Frederick founder, President & CEO of the Hawaii Big Boyz Youth Tackle Football League is planning another season for 2011. He is in the stage of putting together officer's for his league and so far has asked Jim Corn to serve as our League Commissioner for the first year. Coach Corn has been involved with the youth football management business for 25 years plus. Mr. Junya (Jr.) Felise, the founder, President of the 96792 Seahawks is interested in serving on our HBBYTFL Board, and Shandel Wright the founder and president of the Kapolei are interested in serving as our league secretary. His real challenge is to find an accountant to serve as the league's financial director. All associated with our HBBYTFL are volunteers.

Father John related the original Big Boyz concept was for kids 12 to 14 years old who were too heavy to play Pop Warner or island youth tackle football. He said there are several Hawaii organizations getting into the so called Big Boyz football business, but have no idea why it started or the main concept of the big boy league. Now the other so called leagues are letting high school kids and 15 year olds to play. Because these so called other big boy leagues have not stuck to the main concept, that's why we are bringing back in 2011 the "original" Hawaii Big Boyz Youth Football League for kids 9 to 11 years old (elementary division) who must weigh at least 100 pounds and can weight up to 250 pounds. As for the 12 to 14 year olds (intermediate division), they must weigh at least 130 pounds and up to 300 pounds. No high school players are allowed to play, and no 15 year olds are allowed to play. For now, "we want to be professional." Right now they have two months to get everything set up for the league in February 2011. Any questions or inquiry, email Father John Frederick at; hawaiianwarriors@aol.com.

Na Keiki Mele O Pauoa (The Singing Children of Pauoa) & The Pauoa Ukulele Club.

Football season is finally coming to an end. It has been a great season, although an unfortunate one for the Kahuku Red Raiders. On the brighter side, we can look forward to many other upcoming events, and recognition of our talented local kids that go unnoticed or unreported.

In fact, I was invited tonight at 6:00pm to watch the Na Keiki Mele O Pauoa & Pauoa Ukulele Club perform at the Aloha Tower Don Ho's Island Grill, directed by Christine Wee. Christine is the director of the school chorus, Na Keiki Mele O Pauoa and The Pauoa Ukulele Club at Pauoa Elementary School. She believes that kids thrive when given the chance to learn and play music. Putting an instrument into their hands improves the quality of their education and their lives and all kids deserve a chance to play music in school. She was also a former elementary classroom teacher for 14 years, and is now in her fourth year as the Fine Arts teacher at Pauoa Elementary School. Christine is certified in the Orff-Schulwerk music approach which is a way to teach and learn music. It is based on things children like to do; sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance, and keep a beat on anything near at hand and is total, active involvement in music making that incorporates speech, singing, movement, and instrument playing in a creative environment.

Many proud parents attended tonight's event to watch their child's performance, followed by an Ohana dinner at Don Ho's Island Grill. The food was really "ono." I spoke to Christine Wee earlier, and she related that tonight's performance consisted of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders from Pauoa Elementary School. Besides their involvement with music, many of these children are also very active in other school activities such as robotics which they did great last year and took home the Teamwork award. This year they will be participating this coming Saturday, November 20, 2010 - 11:55 to 2:30 pm at the Kalakaua Middle School Cafeteria.

I would like to thank Principal Roberta Richards of Pauoa Elementary School, Christine Wee, and parents Mr. and Mrs. Steve Matsuda for informing me of tonight's event. Special recognition to the following students, Rachel Awana, Isabella Eftink, Lava Faagai, Savannah Galu, Sky Jeter, Kayla Leong, Anela Omerod, Krystal Sam, Lain Tucker, Travis Cabais, Christopher Lee, Reece Lee, Shahiza Lehmann, Jodi Lim, Stephanie Matsuda, Kenton Wong, Chyace Chang, Christine Jones, Noah Manabe-Villanueva, Claudja-Renee So, Natalia Akau-Vasquez, Ka'i Estrella-Alicea, Tyler Ebner, Jensen James Saoit and Tia Sofa and Thang Tran, Minh Tran who were unable to attend. "Leilehua Mighty Mules " Take On The MIL Champions Baldwin Bears 35-26

The Leilehua Mighty Mules from Honolulu made it to the playoffs after defeating Waianae 28-20 on November 6, 2010 and returned to Maui for their fourth year to play the MIL Champions, Baldwin Bears at the Maui War Memorial Stadium on Friday at 6 p.m. I spoke to coach A.J. Roloos of the Bears about his thoughts on tonight's game and whether we will see any special effects. He said "our defense has played well all year and hopefully we will prevail over the Mules, and with our new young QB #12, Keelan Ewaliko hopefully things will work out for the best." As for tonight's game, the Mules kicked off to start the game and it was a battle between both defense and offense. In the first quarter of the game with 4:21 on the game clock, #3 of the Mules (photo above) scored the first TD of the game and again with 2:22 left in the first quarter, #9 of the Mules made it 14-0. The Maui Bears came back in the second quarter with 9:48 on the clock to put 7 points on the board when #81 of the Bears and #2 of the Mules were in a jump ball situation at the goal line. Again, it was a well balanced defense and offense in the first half and into the second half. The Mules must had a good talk from coach Tokuda about their errors, or received new saddles, because they really turned up the dust and ran pass the Maui Bears 35-26. Unbelievable with all the turnovers and penalties by the Mules, it was a miracle that they came out victorious. Congratulations to Coach Nolan Tokuda of the Leilehua Mules, his asst. coaches and to his team for a great win, and special recognition to their QB #7 Kenan Sadanaga with 474 yards passing and 5 TDs, and to Coach A.J. Rollos of the Maui Bears, his asst. coaches and to his team. Leilehua now moves on to play Saint Louis at Aloha Stadium on November 19, 2010 7:30 pm, and Mililani against Waianae at 4:00 pm. Also special thanks to Ralph Medeiros Concessionaire Captain for helping me when I was thirsty! "Click here to see Photos"

"Kalaheo Mustangs OIA JV White Champions" over Waipahu Marauders 25-12

What a day for football at Kailua High School where the #1 Kalaheo Mustangs played the #3 Waipahu Marauders in the 2010 OIA Junior Varsity Football White Conference Championship. The mood seemed strange, especially with the news of Kahuku and the forfeit of their season due to an ineligible player. I spoke to several parents at the game and they were upset with the OIA ruling, but still agreed that "a rule is a rule." Maybe the OIA should amend the rules to look at these kinds situations on a case by case basis and our UH Warriors who loss to Boise State 42-7. As for today's game, it started off well balanced with both Kalaheo and Waipahu having their share of errors and fumbles. Waipahu was the first to score, taking advantage of a Kalaheo fumble and ran in for the first TD with 3 minutes, 24 seconds left in the 1st quarter. Kalaheo QB #2 answered back with a great pass to #3 on the 38 yardline, scoring 6 points and the extra point to take the lead 7-6 in the 1st quarter with 59 seconds left. In the second quarter, Kalaheo added 3 more points to take the lead 10-6. Kalahelo's passing game could have given them two more TD's in the third quarter (photo above), but fumbles kept the score at 10-6. Going into the 4th quarter, Waipahu wasn't about to give up. With the determination of #3 Matapua Tulufale, the Marauder's scored their 2nd TD making it 12-10. In the final minutes of the 4th quarter, Kalaheo took to the air and ended the game 25-12, to take the OIA JV White Championship game today. Congratulations to Coach Chris Mellor, his asst. coaches and team for a well deserved championship game. Also, congratulations to coach Sean Saturnio, his asst. coaches and his team who finished in second place and to #7 Mark Failuaga (photo above) for those game tackles. Still an awesome job! "KAHUKU Red Raiders 10-0 Forfeit 2010 Championship Game"

It is a storybook that almost came true for the Kahuku Red Raiders, who were scheduled to play the Mililani Trojans in tonight's OIA Red Championship game. Kahuku was forced to forfeit tonight's game at Aloha Stadium because of an ineligible player (top photo is not the player in question). It was a hard decision by the OIA officials, but the OIA eligibility rules are clearly written for all to follow. There are a lot of questions as to why only now, especially going into the OIA Red Championship game. Kahuku appealed their case to the OIA but to no avail. Unfortunately, the decision is final and is heartbreaking for all the students at Kahuku High School. With this upset, Mililani Trojans Football team has been named the 2010 OIA Red Champions! I am sure the Trojans were looking forward to playing the Red Raiders, win or lose, but we will never know the true outcome. Yes, things like this happen, but hopefully it has opened up our eyes and we can look forward to next year's football season.

"Trick'O'Treat" Waipahu #2 Marauders "vs" Pearl City #2 Chargers 20-13

Trick 'O' Treat came early at today's JV Football White Conference Championship Playoffs between the #2 Pearl City Chargers and the #3 Waipahu Marauders at Waipahu High School. I had a chance to speak with both coaches prior to the start of the game. Waipahu coach, Sean Saturnio related that they had some serious injuries earlier, but most of his starters are fresh and ready to go. "As for our defense, we have been strong all year and added some coverage package of 4 deep and 4 shallow because of the Chargers passing ability and we're looking for a better game today." Chargers coach, Kai Kamaka, just summed it up by saying "we'll continue to do what's best as we always have, and have fun and a great game today."

It was a "tug of war" during the first quarter, with neither side scoring. In the second quarter, the Chargers QB #10 threw a pass that was intercepted by Waipahu's #45 Lilo Faasipa who ran it in for the first TD of the game. A few plays later, Waipahu's #42 Mataio Fualema intercepted another Chargers pass to give them the lead at the half, 14-0. Besides the two inceptions, penalties plagued the Chargers throughout the first half.

In the second half, the Marauders continued to put on a good defense, but into the fourth quarter, Pearl City's #2 T. Kamaka, put the Chargers on the board with 9 minutes, 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Waipahu wasted no time on their next play when QB #9 Lavatai, ran in for their 3rd TD bringing the score to 20-7 with 7 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the game. Not giving up, the Chargers QB with 3 minutes, 2 seconds left threw a bomb to #1 making the score 20-13, with the Marauders still leading by 7. Talk about a nail biter. Then came fumble after fumble between the two teams, and the Chargers had the last opportunity to tie the game, but in the final 30 seconds of the game, #7 Mark Failuaga (photo above) of the Waipahu Marauders intercepted the Chargers pass, ending the game 20-13. Congratulations to Coach Kai Kamaka of the Pearl City Chargers, his asst. coaches and to his team for a great game. What a "treat" for Coach Sean Saturnio of the Waipahu Marauders and his team, with special mention of #3 Matapua Tulufale, #33 Jason, #45 Lilo Faasipa, #42 Matapua Tulufale and #7 Mark Failuaga for great teamwork and their victory in the OIA JV Football White Conference Championship Playoffs. Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity "vs" Radford Rams 22-29 - "What a Heart Break" and "Congratulation" to the Moanalua JV over Waianae 30-14.

What a break for the Moanalua Varsity Football team. After losing their last three games and thinking they were out of the playoffs, call it what you like, but what a "break" for the Na Menehune who will be playing the Radford Rams on Friday, October 15, 2010 at Radford High School at 7:30 pm. This opportunity comes from the game they played against Roosevelt on October 1, 2010 which they lost 18-0. After this game, it was learned that Roosevelt had an ineligible player. Hopefully, they will take advantage of this second chance and come off with a win to continue on to the playoffs, especially for the 42 seniors. It's going to be a great game and a great challenge for the Moanalua football team.

Just to sum up tonight's game, what a "heartbreak" for the Na Menehune Varsity football team, and for the 42 seniors who played their last game tonight. The Rams took the lead 14-0, but with 57 seconds left in the first half, the Rams fumbled the ball and Moanalua #30 Darren Apo (photo above) took it into the end zone for a TD and a fake field goal passed to #43 Martin Taulele added two points ending the half 8-14. In the third quarter, the Na Menehune came back fired up with two interceptions and scored twice to take the lead 22-14. The Moanalua crowd was on a high, but just when you thought the Na Menehune would come through, Radford pulled out their hidden playbook and came back from behind to take the game 29-22. Congratulations to Coach Arnold Martinez, his coaches and especially to #20 Charles Spencer, #99 Jordan Tanioka, #4 Joel Talaro and the rest of team for a well played game and to #41 Kahanu Puulei-Auld, #20 Zarin Augus, #7 Sheldon Pagba, #3 Chad Aragon and #5 Aaron Kim of the Moanalua JV over Waianae 30-14. Good luck to the Moanalua JV who will be playing Campbell at Campbell Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 2:00 pm and to the Varsity Radford Rams in their next game against Kahuku. Moanalua JV Na Menehune "Take On The Farrington JV Govs" (20-12)

What a big disappointment for the Farrington JV who were 5-1 in the OIA East Red Division. They played the Moanalua Na Menehune JV team on Saturday at the Roosevelt High School field. From the start, Moanalua took advantage of the errors by the Governors, and came out fired up to play. They were tough on defense as well as their offense, and their first TD came when #10 QB Max Fiatoa threw a bomb to #7 Sheldon Pagba who took it all the way down the makai sideline to score the first TD. Their replacement kicker (DB) #5 Aaron Kim (photo above) substituting for #88 Domonique Banta, fired away on his first kick to give Moanalua the lead 7-0. Aaron Kim said he found out three days before the game that he would be their kicker for this game. I asked him how he felt and he said "nervous, especially during the first attempt." In the second quarter, the Governor's QB #23 threw a pass to his receiver #87 which was a little high and #14 Branen Oliveros of the Na Menehue covering the pass play, intercepted the ball. Branen ran like there was no tomorrow down the mauka sideline for the 2nd TD of the game, and again #5 Aaron Kim drilled that extra point to continue the lead 14-0, with 7 minutes left on the game clock. In the third quarter, Na Menehune QB #10 threw another great pass to #3 Chad Aragon who had to jump high for it, but managed to run it in for another TD to make it 20-0 with 7 minutes and 29 seconds left on the clock. The final score was Moanalua JV over Farrington Governors JV 20-12. Awesome job to JV coach Kelvin Kusano, his coaching staff and the JV players for giving their QB the needed protection. Special recognition to #7 Sheldon Pagba, #14 Branen Oliveros, #3 Chad Aragon and their backup kicker #5 Aaron Kim. Congratulations to Farrington JV coach Roger Boyd for his first year coaching, to his assistant coaches and to his JV players, great effort. More action photos "click here".

Na Koa 'O Anuenue (Homecoming) "vs" Kalaheo Mustangs (24-35)

I previously covered the Na Koa O Anuenue Football team under head coach Kealohamakua Wengler. Besides tonight's game against the Kalaheo Mustangs, it was also their Homecoming game. Nine seniors were honored, #7 Makamae Otani-Wengler, #25 Ikaika Gante, #36 Imaikalani Keama, #51 Kamea Kahiapo, #52 Pono Vegas, #54 Wili'oho Ka'awa, #75 Olino Kaleopa'a, #76 Kalanikoa Ahquin and #78 Iokepa Waiwai'ole and their home court from 1st grade to 12th grade. Click here to see the photos. As for the game, it was hard fought to the finish. From my past coverage of the Na Koa O Anuenue football team, it is one of the smallest high school teams. For the first time, they had twenty players suited up tonight and they showed so much energy, dedication, loyalty, and heart. Anuenue scored the first TD by #43 La'akea Mano'i-Hyde (photo above) and the extra 2 points by #5 Mahuka Cullen to take the lead 8-0. One of players got injured early in the 1st quarter and he shouted, "oh no not now, the game just started." Before I knew it, he was back in the game playing. Into the third quarter, Anuenue had several injuries and talk about dedication, I could see some of them limping back into the game and they just kept fighting on. This I call, "going beyond the call of duty." It was heartbreaking to see them fall behind on their homecoming night, but in the end they were still standing tall. The game ended 24-35 with Kalaheo coming out on top. Congratulations, to coach Kealohamakua Wengler, his coaches and to his football players. Special recognition to the nine seniors and to Kaleheo coach Chris Mellor, his coaches and his team.

"Na Menehune Volleyball Girls Sweep McKinley Tigers Tonight"

What an exciting night for the Moanalua Na Menehune Volleyball girls who swept the McKinley Tigers in all three events, the Blue 23-15 25-17, JV 25-11 25-7 and the Varsity game 25-18 27-26 in a filled Moanalua gym. Talk about "hot," the temperature in Honolulu was 86 degrees this afternoon and the temperature in the gym was even "hotter." Believe me, I was dripping with sweat and the excitement just added more to the heat. The Na Meneuhue placed the pressure on the Tigers all afternoon and into the evening, especially in the Varsity (photo above #11 Momi Mariani) game. The crowd really got into the game with both sides cheering and shouting with every point, until the very end. Everyone was on the edge of their seats as the score went back and forth 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25 and finally ended in favor of the Na Menehue Varsity team at 27-26. Congratulations to the Moanalua Volleyball girls, the coaches and special thanks to Mr. Joel Kawachi for letting me be part of tonight's excitement and coverage. Click here to see Photos.

Moanalua Varsity "vs" Football Top 10, #1 Kahuku Red Raiders (6-27)

Friday, September 24, 2010 was the "Battle of the Bulge" football game between the Na Menehune Moanalua football team and the top ten Kahuku Red Raiders, who were voted #1 by the coaches and media around the state. The Raiders pride themselves on a mixture of experience and power, and their offense is a running game, but they also have a passing game. As one stated, none of this would be possible without "academics" that come first as well as "out work the competition" by staying in shape through their weight room, on the field, and doing aerobics. But, their main strength coming into any game is their "Haka," to pump them up.

Tonight's game started off looking good for the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity football team, but errors put a halt to their fighting efforts and the Red Raiders seem to have shut down the Na Menehune passing game by rushing their quarterback and sacking him throughout the game. The Red Raiders took advantage of these errors and led in the first half with #33 (photo above) diving in for the first TD and ending the half at 21-3. They continued their running game along with their passing game to take the game 27-6 over the Na Menehune. If it wasn't for the errors, it could possibly have been a closer game, but overall they did very well against the #1 Kahuku Red Raiders. As written by Jason Kaneshiro for the Star Advertiser, " Kahuku head coach Reggie Torres said, "we ended up shutting them down to field goals, but still Moanalua did a great job tonight" and "we were fortunate to come out with a win." Congratulations to the Kahuku Red Raiders, their coaches and players for a great game and also to the Moanalua Na Menehune coaches and players for their effort. Special recognition to #2 Michael Egami and #33 Lee Arakawa. Click here to see more photos.

MANOA PANIOLO "vs" KAPAHULU RAIDERS (18-0)

What a busy week for me, from Las Vegas LVSSA Championship to High School football here on Oahu, to Division II Pee Wee football. I have to say that covering the Pee Wee football was a pleasure and no better place to enjoy a relaxing Saturday game at Crane Park in Kaimuki. The atmosphere was an enjoyable one for me. I was invited by Mr. Phillip (Bucky) Buchannan, Business Manager and Trainer of the Manoa Paniolo who play in the Oahu Pop Warner Division II Pee Wee. The kids range in age from 9-12 and their head coach is Kyle Pupuhi. This is the Manoa Paniolo's 3rd game of the season. The first was forfeited by the Hawaii Young Warriors, the 2nd against Hawaii-Kai ended 13-0, and today's game with the Kapahulu Raiders was 18-0.

Today's game against the Kapahulu Raiders was a great game for both sides, very professional like shooting an "NFL" game. The intensity of these kids was very serious, and they played like there was no tomorrow. The Manoa Paniolo's running back, #9 Shon Aragon scored the first touchdown with amazing speed and cut backs throughout the game. Wide receiver #88 Ekolu Akau making key tackles and blocks all day long against the Raiders. Great job to both Shon and Ekolu and thanks the Manoa Paniolo management staff, coaches and team for inviting me to cover this event and "thank you" for the ono bento. Thanks also to the Raiders President, Lyntillus Boyd and his coaching staff and to all the players.

MOANALUA JV and RADFORD HIGH SCHOOL - FINAL SCORE 18-13

Today's game started at 2:00pm. I just got back from Las Vegas covering the LVSSA softball World Masters and thought I was still in Las Vegas because today's game was very hot between the Na Menehune and the Radford Rams. Moanalua was the first to score and missed the extra point, making the score 6-0. It may have been "too hot" after watching fumble after fumble by the Menehunes. The fumbles were a stumbling block for the Na Menehune, allowing the Rams to take the lead 13-12 with 1 minute 38 seconds left on the clock. A winning catch by #21 Dakota Scaramazzo (photo top left) for Moanalua, pulled in the ball from quarterback #10 Max Fiatoa to take the lead 18-13. With 7 seconds left on the clock, the Rams quarterback #10 was stopped cold by Moanalua's #65 Noah Cabbacang (photo above) all the way down to his shoes, ending the game over the Rams 18-13. Great job and congratulations to Head Coach Arnold Martinez, Kevin Kusano, the coaching staff and all the Na Menehune JV players. "Click here to see more photos"

2010 LVSSA Las Vegas Senior Softball Tournament - Family Stones 55's AA Finished in Second Place.

Aloha and hello from Las Vegas. The weather here is a hot 104 degrees and the weatherman is predicting thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday. I am here again for the LVSSA Tournament with 88 teams participating from the 50's to the 80's. This tournament runs from August 27-29, with the Championship game being held on Sunday. Best of luck to our Hawaii teams and to the 55's. Go get 'em!!!!!! Last year, I covered the Family Stones 50's, and it was a rough finish, but they gave it their all. This year, I'll be covering the 55's who played two games today (Friday). In the first game against the Sonic Blast, the Stones were behind by one run, but some how the Sonics squeaked by in the end to take the game 15-14 over the 55's Family Stones. In the second game against the Tucson Cactus from Arizona, it was a little sticky at times, like stepping on cactus, but the 55's Family Stones Eddie Han (photo above) floated through the air more than once and stopped those fly balls into his right field with super stretched arms to seal the second game with a final score of 16-14. Awesome job Eddie Han and team 55's.

The tournament continued Saturday, at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex in Henderson, and the 55's played the Fresh Poki team from Maui who won two games on Friday against the Tucson Cactus and Sonics. The 55's took the lead from the start and finished 19-9 over Fresh Poki. In the afternoon, during the course of elimination playoffs, the 55's had to play the Fresh Poki team again, and it was a battle to the finish. The teams were tied and had to go into international rules. Support on both sides was really loud, but in the end, the Fresh Poki team from Maui came from behind and ended the game 21-20.

It's Sunday, the final Championship day, and the Family Stones 55's started their elimination games by winning the first two, 19-5 over the Tucson Cactus and 17-16 over the Fresh Poki team from Maui. The third game ended their streak when the Sonic Blast ran ahead from the start and finished 21-16 over the Family Stones 55's. Congratulations to all players, and especially to Coach Darryl Samura "Thumper," and the 55's who invited me this year to cover and photo shoot their tournament. Special recognition to John Barinobis, Grant Sugai, Willie McMillan, George Meyer, Howard Manoiki and Eddie Han . "Click here to see more photos,"

Na Koa 'O Anuenue OIA White Division II "vs" Pearl City Chargers (8-39)

Tonight the Na Koa 'O Anuenue Football team attempted to make a come back from their loss last week against Kamehameha Kapalama 8-35. For the second week, they got tossed back again, against the Pearl City Chargers for a final score of 8-39. At the start of the game, Na Koa 'O Anuenue won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball. The Chargers were the first to score when they took over possession of the ball. Their first play was a pass play that took them into the end zone for 6 points and a field goal conversion to lead 7-0 with 7 minutes and 34 seconds in the first quarter. From this point, the Chargers continued to dominate the game with more aerial attacks and interceptions. Although it was an uphill battle for the Na Koa 'O Anuenue, they never gave up. Some of their players suffered injuries which didn't help, but it was a good game between both teams. Congratulations to Coach Kai Kamaka, his staff and the Pearl City Chargers football team, and Coach Tim Wengler, his staff and the Na Koa O' Anuenue football team. Special thanks to Reid Shigemasa, the Athletic Director for Pearl City High School. For more photos "click here"

OIA East Red Division II Moanalua "vs" McKinley Tigers (Varsity) 28-20 (JV) 24-0

It was a dream come true last year for the Moanalua Na Menehune JV and Varsity teams when they took the OIA White Championship. They now start a new adventure and beginning in the OIA Red Division on Friday, August 13, 2010 against the McKinley Tigers. All their hard work and practice paid off tonight with the JV (24-0) and Varsity (28-20) both coming off with their first win against the Tigers. The Moanalua JV with mostly all new players this year did an outstanding job against the Tigers. As for the Varsity team, they too showed a lot of "spirit." They came out to play and were the first to score. The Na Menehune were very determined and held their ground as the Tigers caught up to them 22-20 going into the 4th quarter. The Tigers effort to tie the game for two points was stopped by the Menehune's #21 Anthony Locket (DB) who blocked a pass to McKinley player #7 Solomon Dixon (DB), and the score remained 22-20 in the 4th quarter with 10 minutes and 8 seconds left. It was a very "hot" game all night between both teams, so hot that the water sprinklers came on as you can see from the photo above. The Menehune's finally cooled things down and ended the game 28-20. Congratulations to the Moanalua Na Menehune football team, Coach Arnold Martinez and his staff for an exciting new beginning. "2010 A NEW BEGINNING AND A NEW DIVISION"

For the Moanalua Na Menehune JV and Varsity Football team, it was a dream come true for all, especially with the Varsity team winning the OIA Championship in the White Division against Aiea 27-21 on November 6, 2009 at the Aloha Stadium. As I look back at the 2009 season, it was an "awesome" display of team work and hard work by all the players. I remember seeing them practice everyday and thinking during their games that the game isn't over until it's over. I think back especially to the game against Aiea on October 16, 2009 where "Nalea Trujillo" who at the time was a freshman on the JV Moanalua Football team and a former U.S. Youth Soccer player, kicked the winning field goal against Aiea ending the game 17-14. Talk about not giving up. What I witnessed last season was a true dream come true, and they all deserved it. Good luck Na Menehune, 2010 is a new beginning in the OIA Red Division. Keep the faith and continue with what you believe in and never give up. Win or lose, you all are brothers and sisters. Have a safe 2010 Football season. The 45th Annual Makawao Town Parade, and the 55th Annual Rodeo On Maui

The 45th Annual Makawao Town celebration was held during the Nation's Independence Day weekend truly shows the "Hawaiian Style Heritage of the Hawaiian Paniolos." Festivities started on Thursday, July 1 continuing thru Sunday, July 4, 2010 and included a Paniolo Parade followed by the 55th annual Rodeo which was held at the "Oskie Rice Arena which is about a mile up the road off Olinda Road. If you have never seen the parade, it's like the old Hawaiian Cowboy (Paniolo) days. The keiki (children) riding their "stick horses," kick off the start of the parade followed by the Bikers Club, Antique Car parade show, Shriners, Haleakala National Park Rangers, Grand Marshall, Junior Rodeo Queen, Princess, Maui Cheer Babes, Maui Pipe Band, Miss Maui, Maui Extreme, Piiholo Ranch, the Koki Frogs, and ending with the Unicycles and the politicians were out in force since it is a political year. The announcer at the parade was Mr. Ed Hoffman who has been doing this for the past 8 years and has also been a rodeo competitor himself for a number of years. To see Parade photos, "Click here".

When the parade ended, mostly everyone headed over to the "Oskie" Rice Arena Maui Roping Club to watch the 55th Annual Rodeo event. If you are contemplating going to next year's event, set your "GPS" to 3674 Baldwin Avenue (Makawao). This is T. Komoda Store & Bakery, one of the oldest and best bakeries on Maui. At this intersection, turn onto Olinda Road and continue about a mile and you'll see Oskie Rice Arena on your left. If you arrive at the Oskie Rice Arena early (7:45 am) enough there is a shuttle to the parade. For me, it was two long days of Makawao celebration and Rodeo. This was only my second rodeo, and I can't believe I spent much of my time watching where I was stepping ........... Where ever you walked, there were horse droppings like golf balls on a driving range! Yes, inattention could land you in deep "s"?!@#, literally. You know what I mean. I also learned not to stand behind any horses.

Some of this year's events included the Mixed Team Roping, Wahine and Keiki Barrel Race, Wahine Breakaway Roping, Wahine Steer Undecorating, Century Team Roping, Dally Team Roping, Mugging, Calf Roping, Po'o Wai U, and Bull Bashing. Boy, from my observation, you would think they need a lot of "Tokuhon and Mineral Ice" for all those ouwees. What makes a sky diver jump from an airplane? I also asked myself, why does a Paniolo jump off his horse onto running cattle and not use his rope? Well, they seem to enjoy themselves, and the excitement from the crowd gives them that extra challenge. Winning also has a lot to do with their performance and the monetary prizes provide that additional incentive. Congratulations to all that participated. For me, the most enjoyable of the rodeo events was the "Mugging" where one Paniolo chases down and ropes the cattle, and his partner runs from the sideline and tries to tackle the cattle down so the Paniolo can tie off the cattle for the best time. Another favorite was the "Bull Bashing," where the Paniolo tries to hang or stay on the bull for the longest time without falling off. I sure enjoyed myself and it was a great experience. Special thanks to Mr. Peter Baldwin for the invitation, to Mr. Herman Louis Decoite for allowing me the opportunity to shoot the photos. Thanks also to the three original Paniolo and founders of the Rodeo in Hawaii, Apey Albert Fernandez from Maui, Mr. William Andrade, the Grand Marshall of today's parade who is from the Big Island, and to Herman Decoite from Maui for permitting me to be in the reserved seating at the rodeo, and to all personnel at this year's rodeo event. I cannot forgot one person, and that is Linda "Dhiru" LaRotonda of Equity One in Makawao who was so kind to let me use their restroom. If you ever need a realtor, call Linda and she can help you as she did for me. "Aloha" Linda and thank you! To see Rodeo photos, "Click here".

MOLOKAI 2010 STRONGMAN - "PETER PALE" - NA PU'UWAI 1ST ANNUAL FITNESS EXPO

Today, I am flying over to Molokai for the "Strongman" competition. What an adventure. This was my first trip to Molokai and friends told me not to blink because the airport is a very small one. Yes indeed it was. I was surprised that we found the airport, "whew" it was like going back into the twilight zone. There was hardly anyone around when we landed, except for several men that looked like NFL football players. I later learned it was the Strongman crew from Honolulu that was helping out for the event. The team leader was Mr. Tony Leiato and they were nice enough to offer me a ride if I didn't already have one. I have to say the people of Molokai are "awesome" and have so much "ohana."

I spoke to Tony Leiato (photo top right) who gave me some insight on the Strongman competition. His good friend, Peter Pale (photo top left) is the coordinator of this year's Na Pu'uwai 1st Annual Fitness Expo competition on Molokai. He said the Strongman competition here is specifically for Molokai, and is the brain child of Peter Pale, long time athlete, football player who now resides on Molokai. He wanted to do a strongman show to get the public involved in the health and fitness aspect of life. Why not bring everybody out to watch people do crazy strength feats like pulling a truck, flipping a 800 lb. tire, Atlas Stone lifting, bench press, dead lift and things like this. Tony also related that the Strongman event has been going on for the past 3-4 years. So who should we be watching in this year's competition? I am told that Peter Pale is the strongest guy on Molokai right now and this is the first year he has opened it to outside competitors from the outer islands. Should be interesting.

Well, today's competition was something to see. The master of ceremonies was "CHAMP" (photo right) Kaneshiro, and he was the highlight of this competition, funny to the max! I am surprised the contestants could concentrate... Anyway, I met up with Peter Pale and he explained that this is the 1st Annual Fitness Expo. This year they decided to combine the Health Fair and 10k run walk which is usually held during the winter months, with the Strongman Competition. At today's event, there was lots of food, and educational booths dealing with fitness. I want to congratulate Peter Pale on winning this year's competition and keeping the trophy on Molokai, and also for continuing to be the "strongest man" on Molokai. Congratulations also goes out to all the other contestants and again, thank you Peter Pale, Tony Leiato, Ricky Morris, Andy Ramos and to Mr. Joe Dillon, for my ride to and from the event. Pacific Big Boyz JV "2010 Champions" - Waikele Wild Cats over Westside Warriors 62-6

"Wow" is all I can say. No, I was not at a basketball game. Today, the Pacific Big Boyz football championship was held at Keehi Lagoon. I don't mean to make it sound like a one sided game, but the JV Waikele Wild Cats was not only well prepared, but they reminded me of the U.S. Navy "Blue Angels," very precise. The Wildcats must have done their homework because they could do no wrong against the Westside Warriors. "Congratulations" to coach Roy Tavares, JV Coach of the Year, and to #54 Mark Failauga "MVP of the Year" and #24 Timmy Riviera "Defensive Player of the Year" and to his assistant coaches and his team the JV Waikele Wild Cats 2010 Champions!

Prior to the start of the game, I spoke to coach Roy Tavares about his thoughts on today's game. He said the whole team is ready to go. Two weeks ago, they set a goal to make it to the championship game. They made it through the semi-finals by making some adjustments to strengthen their offense, and keeping their defense alert and aware of their positions. We will try to wear the other team out and throw the ball more, but if need be, we will turn to the running game. So far things have worked out quite well. Coach Tavares said they plan to come out strong today, as they previously did in their other games. Nobody has been able to stop them yet.

I also had a chance to speak with coach Ale Tolentino of the Westside Warriors, who took the Championship in 2009. He said their game plan is to isolate their defensive end and come off the corner and out run them, because "we can match their power." After today's game, Coach Tolentino said "the Wild Cats game plan was a lot better than ours, they just out coached us and outplayed us. We learn to win all year, and we also have to learn to lose. What Waikele did to us today, we have done the same to others all year." As for today's loss, his team is taking it all in stride.

Also at today's game, the Westside Warriors Intermediate team took 1st place over 1 Mission who came in 2nd. Halawa Trinity came in 3rd, and the Westside Coast Raiders came in 4th. JV 1 Mission came in 3rd and the JV Waipahu Knights 4th. As for the Varsity teams, Halawa Trinity came in 1st place and Pacific Youth Athletics Spartans came in 2nd place. Waipahu Knights came in 3rd and Kapolei Spartans finished 4th in today's championship games. Congratulations to all team coaches and players for displaying good sportsman
ship. I would also like to thank the Pacific Big Boyz Organization, Pastor Muao Ava, President, Founder and League Commissioner; Pastor John Opeta, League Vice President and President, CEO of 1 Mission (photo right); Lena Conrad, League Secretary and President of the Waipahu Knights, and Pastor Taavao Alualu. Special congratulations to Pastor Alualu's son, #44 Tyson Alualu who was selected as the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars and the ninth highest draft pick in Cal history. Thank you to Father John Frederick, creator of the Big Boyz organization, for providing me with information on the background and start of the Big Boyz organization. "MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION" - Mrs. Cherry Aris and Daughter "Caleylla"

In 1980, the "Make-A-Wish Foundation" was founded after a little boy named Chris Greicius, realized his lifelong dream to become a police officer. Then in 1982, it was established here in Hawaii and is the 13th of 66 chapters in 50 states. Today I was invited to Caleylla Aris' birthday party at the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center. Her mother Cherry Aris, told me it was Caleylla's first birthday party since falling ill in 2008 with "acute myelogenous leukemia" which is a fast growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

I have done all sorts of sports reporting and special events, but writing this story is the hardest thing I have had to do. She is such a sweet and beautiful child. I had a chance to speak with Cherry and in talking to her, she remains very strong and holds her head high. The family is "still wishing and hoping that a miracle will come about for Caleylla" who will be 3 years old on June 17, 2010. Cherry related that they have stopped the chemotherapy because the cancer has spread throughout Caleylla's body, but she still goes in for blood transfusions as needed. If any of you have children, love them and cherish them for we never know what can happen.

Let us all pray for Caleylla and hope for that miracle. Caleylla's grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Mar and Marlita Aris, and Caleylla's father, Cris Aris flew in from Las Vegas. Also present was Cherry's son, Cyril Aris, her mother, Mrs. Felicidad Clarito, and her sister, Suzanne De Vera. Caleylla's original wish was to go to Disneyland, but due to her condition it was not recommended by her doctor. Her second wish was to have a birthday party with "Barney." Well, her wish came true today and it was awesome to see her great
big smile on the Merry-Go-Round. That picture will always remain with me. In closing, it is a very touching story and for those who want to help, you may send a donation to Cherry Aris c/o "Caleylla" at 94-467 Hene Street, Waipahu, HI 96796, checks only please.

I would like to thank Ms. Lee Henry-Chang, Program Director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and to Volunteer Adrienne Abreu for their kokua and information about the "Make A Wish Foundation" here in Hawaii. Also, much mahalo to Robyn Chow-Hoy, Child Life Specialist at Kapiolani Children's Hospital and to Dr. Wade Kyono. God Bless and let us all pray for Caleylla. More photos "click here".

St. Elizabeth Crusaders "vs" St. John The Baptist Catholic School

After 82 years, Maryknoll School finally has its own indoor gym. The Clarence T.C. Ching foundation donated three million to help fund construction of the gym, and today it is named after him. I was invited by one of the parents, Mr. Bryan Arce to attend today's game between the St. Elizabeth Crusaders and St. John The Baptist Catholic School in division 2 of the Catholic Schools playoffs. His daughter, Chantelle Arce, #14 is a point guard for the St. Elizabeth School Crusaders. The Crusaders played a great game today, and Chantelle stole the ball in the fourth period with 9 seconds on the clock (photo right) to score the last point against St. John The Baptist Catholic School. From the beginning, the Crusaders displayed great team work and came thru for a final score of 39-22 against St. John the Baptist Catholic School. Congratulations goes out to Coach James Von Rohr of the St. Elizabeth "Crusaders" and his girls basketball team for job well done. Special recognition goes out to #14, Chantelle Arce who scored 24 points and had the most baskets in today's game today. See more photos, "click here".

"PACIFIC ROLLER DERBY" Villains "vs" Crazy 808s at Kamiloiki Community Park

"Roller Derby" in Hawaii? "They're Back" .. If you grew up like me, in the 50's and 60's, you probably remember Honolulu Civic Auditorium and Rainbow Rollerland. In fact, from 1937-1959 during the golden age of roller skating, more than 3,000 roller rinks shot across America including Hawaii.

Today, I was invited to attend a Roller Derby event in Hawaii Kai at 5:00pm. The teams participating in "Bout-2", are the Villians "vs" Crazy 808s. I spoke to Sylvia Flores, media relations (photo above), whose skate name is "Tadbit Nasty" and her team is the "Mischievils", and she gave me some inside information about Pacific Roller Derby (PRD).

Pacific Roller Derby is a flat track derby league started in 2008. It is owned and operated by the skaters, for the skaters. All of the members have an opportunity to vote in the decisions of the organizations while developing their athletic abilities. Their members are strong, diverse, and competitive women that promote and practice good sportsmanship.

The game itself is a series of races between two teams of five players. Each team's jammer is the only player to score points. Four blockers try to stop the other team's jammer while propelling their own jammer forward. Each team has one blocker who is the pivot, she controls the speed of the pack and calls her team's play. Jammers wear stars and pivots wear stripes on their helmets.

The jammers try to catch up to the pack, work their way through and come out the other side. No one scores any points during the first lap, but the first jammer to pass the opposing blockers legally becomes the lead jammer. A referee points out the lead jammer and follows her progress around the track. The lead jammer can "call the jam" before the end of the two-minute period by putting her hands on her hip. Jammers score one point for each opposing player she passes. Skaters cannot engage the jammer 20 feet from the pack. Skaters can receive minor or major penalties. Four minor penalty will send the skater to the box. There is no fighting, no punching, no kneeing, no kicking, no hitting to the backs, no cutting the track and no talkin' smack to the refs! "Congratulations" to the "Villains" on todays event. Special thanks to head referee Mike Crinella, whose skate name is "Handsome and Katie Stevens, whose skate name is "Collideascope" of the "Crazy 808s" ." Click here more more information. "Waikele Wild Cats" Upset the 1 Mission JV Big Boyz Football Team 36-28

What a game between the Waikele Wild Cats and the 1 Mission JV Big Boyz football teams today at Pearl City Manana Community Park. The weather was perfect for football. Last week, 1 Mission defeated the Westside Warriors 38-34, and the Waikele Wild Cats defeated the Wahiawa Lions of Judah, 58-0. Today's game would determine who will remain in first place. From the start, it looked as though 1 Mission was on a mission to take the game away from the Waikele Wild Cats, and remain number one with a score of 20-12 in the first half. Both teams had their share of penalties that cost them yardage.

In the second half, the Wild Cats made some adjustments and came out roaring, not like a lion but as a "Wild Cat". They took charge of the second half and came storming back hard and determined. The final score ended with the Waikele Wild Cats coming back to upset 1 Mission, 36-28. Congratulations to head coach Roy Tavares (photo top left) of the Waikele Wild Cats, his coaching staff and his team for their determination, discipline and "great team work." Special recognition to #54 Mark Failauga, #25 Reno Abero, #42 Leesay Lauti, #24 Timmy Riviera, #5 Jeremy Viagalele and the Wild Cats defense to secure the game win over the 1 Mission team. I would also like to congratulate head coach Fa'asisina Moeone (photo top right) of the 1 Mission football team and his coaching staff for a great effort and a fine football team. "Darwin Abenoja Baby Boomers" at The USTA National Championship

I learned that a group of Filipino tennis players who play tennis every Saturday at the Kalakaua tennis courts have some great tennis history behind them. They were once known by the nickname "FATA," Filipino American Tennis Association "Baby Boomers" in 1999. They also went by the names, Kalakaua Knights and The Lobbers. The team captain at that time was Mr. Darwin Abenoja Sr., (photo above). His son, Darwin Jr. inherited his dad's love for tennis, and played for Moanalua High School. He was selected by the coaches under the Western Division OIA as the 1996 Soft Tennis OIA Star!

The "Baby Boomers" was one of seven teams who made it to the National Championship round by winning the USTA Hawaii Pacific Championship on Maui and headed for Tucson, Arizona in 1999. The 3.5 Baby Boomers (Oahu) placed second and lost to the Las Vegas team. Several years later, Darwin re-grouped his team and in 2007 they again made it to the USTA Championship in the "50 and over" league. They won the State Championship and headed for Tucson, Arizona for the National Championship but didn't make the final four. So now days, they just get together every week, and have a one day weekend tournament every three or four months of the year. Other than that, they just have fun playing tennis and talking about the good old days. "Click" here to see photos.

"BIG BOYZ" JV Football Westside Warriors "vs" Waikele Wild Cats

Today at Nanakuli Beach Park, I was invited to a "Big Boyz Football" JV (ages 12-13) game. I ran into head coach of the Westside Warriors (4-0), Ale Tolentino and he related that he has been with the Warriors since they first started 6-7 years ago under Father John Frederick. The"Big Boyz" was organized for kids who want to play Pop Warner football but can't because of their weight, which means they would have to wait until they get into high school. This gives them an opportunity to experience playing football before they get into high school. Last year, the Warriors took the 2009 Championship. Today's game will be a "battle of the bulge" because the Waikele Wild Cats are another top team in this division and are undefeated, 3-0. I also had a chance to speak with head coach of the Wild Cats, Roy Tavares who has been with the team for the past 3-4 years. He also told me that "Big Boyz" football was to accommodate the kids who cannot make weight requirements to play Pop Warner. Today's game should be a good one, and the Wild Cats are hoping to come out on top against the Warriors who are a tough team.

"Tough" was the word for both teams. I have to admit that all throughout the game, "good sportsmanship" was held to the highest standard. At half time, the Warriors took the lead at 26-22. During the fourth quarter, one of the Warriors team players #52 Charidon Leleo Jr. (center and lineman) was down due to an injury, and the game came to a halt. Both sides were hoping all was well, and he was helped off the field with medical waiting for him. I checked with Charidon and thankfully, he said he was doing okay.

As for the final game score, the Warriors ran off with the game 46-38 over the Wild Cats. Congratulations to the Warriors and to head coach Ale Tolentino and his staff, and to the Wild Cats and head coach Roy Tavares and his staff. Great effort on the part of both teams, including the following players, #10 Troutman and #11 Kaawa of the Warriors and #25 Reno, Abero, #24 Timmy Riviera and #54 Mark Failauga (photo above) of the Wild Cats. I would also like to thank the Failauga family for inviting me to the game, and to the Grace Thru Faith Monastery, Pita Mohetau for their "ono" laulau. "click" here to see photos
