OIA Red East Kaiser Cougars Runs Past Moanalua Na Menehune 42-38

It was a "Wild Wild West" shoot out last night at the Kaiser High School gym between the Kaiser Cougars and the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity Girls Basketball team.  Talk about speed and quickness.  Both teams were up and down the court defensively and offensively putting points on the board.  The excitement was so intense at times, we were all on the edge of our seats.  My camera sure got a workout.

The Kaiser Cougars #20 Ashley Soong scored first, giving them the lead 2-0 with 6:57 on the clock in the 1st period.  Na Menehune #25 Hoku Mateo answered right back to make it 2-2 with 6:26 left in the 1st period, and #1 LaChae McColor scoring 2 more points from the outside for Na Menehune to take the lead 4-2.  At the end of the 2nd period the Cougars led 25-21.  It was a back and forth battle all night, and at the end of the 3rd period the Cougars still led 35-34.

It was defensive game down to the wire with 7:29 left in the 4th period, and the Cougars held on to the lead, 39-36.  Na Menehune #1 LaChae McColor (photo above) fought hard to come back to make it 38-39 with 1:19 on the clock.  With penalties against Moanalua and free shots, the Kaiser Cougars ended the game on top 42-38.  What a great and exciting game tonight. "Congratulations" to both teams.  For more stats, "click here." Come back later for more photos.

2012 Shop With A Cop at Ke'eaumoku Walmart Honolulu

Photo with Santa (John Shaw) Tagiifiti and Asst./Chief Clayton Kau
Every year just before Christmas, the Honolulu Police Department and Walmart partner up to host the annual Shop with a Cop event. This year is a little special. I spoke to Corporal Kevin Nakano (photo below) of the Honolulu Police Department, District 1 Community Policing Team who related that this year besides partnering up with Walmart, the military's 624th Aeromedical Staging Squadron, Joint Base Pearl Harbor participated as well, and were joined by heroes from the Law Enforcement HPD Officers who came out on their own time this morning.

"What we do is take children out to go shopping for Christmas, usually children that have hardship in their family or maybe their family is incarcerated. This year we have some individuals who have lost their fathers in the war with Afghanistan.  Some of them have lost their parents to illness and just have economic needs.  So that's what we do to help these families and bring Christmas to them.  Since many of them don't have much money,  we share the Aloha spirit and take them shopping.  This year we also had some kids from the homeless shelter and got them on buses to view Honolulu Hale to see the Christmas lights."

Seeing these children on one side seems sad and very emotional, but to see their smiles and hear their thank yous was very touching, and makes you realize how lucky most of us are.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the children that were present this morning at the Shop with a Cop annual event.  A special Mahalo to Mr. Eddie Flores Jr., President of L&L Drive-Inn and L&L Hawaiian Barbecue for donating the breakfast to all the kids at today's event. 2012-2013 OIA Red East Division - Moanalua Na Menehune Basketball

Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach Greg Tacon

The 2012-2013 OIA Red East Boys Basketball season has started for the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity Boys who so far under Head Coach Greg Tacon have 7 wins and 5 losses. I spoke to Head Coach Greg Tacon and he said "defensively we're really a good team, we work well and function well as a group which is important to us."

"This year we have two starters back from last year, senior point guard Kahanu Pu'ulei-Auld (photo left), all state guard extremely fast, great in the open court. The other returnee is 6'4" sophomore, Eliet Donley who is probably the easiest person I've ever coached. He does everything correctly, nothing about him is flashy and he's really efficient."

"We also have three others, but the one that stands out is senior 6'3", Justin Hudcovic who's really accurate, has a great attitude and a hard worker. We have a couple transfers, 5'10" Ola Brown from the Academy of the Pacific and 6'4" Austin Failauga who came from Mid-Pac and is a former sophomore from Moanalua High School. The main thing is we continue what we do best and try to play our other kids who didn't get a chance to play and give them some experience playing time." Click here to see some candid photos.

Christmas In Hawaii with Hokulani - "Santa Paws"

Christmas in Hawaii is no different then the rest of the world. As I was finishing up my shopping at one of our local malls, I followed a long line of children and camera flashes going off. Wondering what was going on, I asked some of the kids and thinking at the same time maybe it's "Santa." I stood in line just to get a glimpse of this Santa Claus, and "wow, bow wow," it was a "santa paws." What a sight of Old Saint "Paw" Nick. Actually, this is "Hokulani" who dresses for all occasions and belongs to Mr. Norman Dung of Kaneohe. Cute yeah? Hokulani wants to wish "Merry Christmas" to all those shoppers for stopping by and taking my picture."

As for me, I continued my shopping and followed the music to the center stage of Ala Moana Shopping Center where Kumu Hula Tiare Noelani Chang and her Halau from Wai'anae were performing. Great performance! I spoke to Kumu Hula Tiare Noelani Chang after their performance and was told that she started her Halau in 1995 in her back yard for the purpose of

teaching young girls hula for church performances. She has been teaching the culture of Hawaii to youth in Wai'anae for 15 years. You can find her website at noelani-chang.com. Much Mahalo to Hokulani and Kumu Hula Tiare Noelani Chang for sharing my Christmas in Hawaii.

2012-2013 OIA Paddling New Season at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park On Oahu

On Saturday, December 15, 2012, the OIA started it's 2012-2013 paddling season with a regatta race on Oahu at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park.  It was a beautiful morning, with windy conditions causing 4 canoes to flip over (photo above).  No students were hurt, but the excitement was high among all the participants as they were getting ready to start at sun break.  Parents, uncles, aunties, grandmas, cousins, and family friends filled the beach with their tents and lots of food for the regatta racers.  They was so much "aloha" among all that attended to give their support to the 22 high schools participating in today's long distance races.

At the end of the competition, the winners were JV Girls West "Waianae," JV Girls East "Kaiser;" Varsity Girls West "Waianae," the Varsity Girls East "Kalaheo;" JV Boys West "Radford," JV Boys East "Kalaheo;" Varsity Boys West "Nanakuli," Varsity Boys East "Kalaheo;" JV Mixed West "Nanakuli," JV Mixed East "Kahuku;" Varsity Mixed West "Leilehua," and Varsity Mixed East "Kalani." The 2012-2013 OIA East Girls Soccer. "Moanalua Na Menehune" Take Both The JV & Varsity Wins Over Roosevelt.

Moanalua Na Menehune #5 Storm Kenui
The 2012-2013 OIA East Moanalua Na Menehune and Roosevelt Rough Riders played their first game on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the Moanalua High School football field.

Moanalua JV Head Coach, Rod Fujimoto said "we have eight sophomores and twelve freshmen this season, so it's pretty new.  Of the eight returnees from last year, six are starters, and the rest will be freshmen starting tonight.  The JV is always a new crop of girls every year and they are progressing since 3 weeks ago till now.  We played a tournament that showed us where our opportunities are and what we need to work on.  The girls are very humble, work very hard, are eager and willing to learn."

Last year, Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity girls won the 2011-2012 OIA Red Division Soccer Championship (10-0-3) over the Kapolei Hurricanes (9-3-1).  Head Coach Nikki Dela Pena said this is her biggest roster yet and so far they've had a very productive pre-season.  "This year I have a returning mid-fielder Storm Kenui #5 (photo above), All State Team, all OIA and leading scorer for our team. She was our most valuable player for two years in a row and had a very good showing at regionals in Arizona, and she will be carrying our offense.  Also working with her on the outside wings is junior Chelcie Sugioka "Mana" #9.  Mana, has been with me since a freshmen and I'm looking for her to play an important roll this year.  In the back, I have Isabelle Delgado "Izzy" #1 a senior and a 4-year starter, and she'll be anchoring the defense in the back.  Again, this is my biggest roster and I have a very big senior class this year.  I want the younger girls to soak up as much knowledge and skills from the seniors so they can pick-up after them."

Tonight, the Na Menehune JV girls played awesome defense against the Rough Riders to take the game 10-1, as did the Na Menehune Varsity girls who kept a tight control of the ball to beat the Rough Riders 1-0.  To see the OIA standings "click here."  For Varsity photos "click here." 2012 First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA D-I State Champs "Kahuku Red Raiders" and D-II " Iolani Raiders"

Kahuku Red Raiders RB/LB #33 Aofaga Wily
Tonight's games at the Aloha Stadium is all about who are the best football teams in the state.  The Division I, Kahuku Red Raiders play Punahou Buffanblu, and in Division II, the Iolani Raiders play Lahainaluna Lunas in the 2012 First Hawaiian Bank Football Championship.  In the first game between Iolani and Lahainaluna, Iolani scored a TD in the 1st quarter, 7-0.  The Lunas took the lead in the 2nd quarter, 7-14 and held the lead all the way into the 4th quarter until the Raiders came from behind to win the game 36-33.  What a heartbreaker for the Lunas.

Prior to the start of the second game between Kahuku Red Raiders and Punahou Buffanblu, I spoke with both head coaches.  Head Coach Reggie Torres related "our team had a great week of practice and it's going to be a great game.  Punahou has a great offense and we'll just take it a game at a time, and this is just another game to focus on.  This is our last leg of our journey and just hope we can finish on top."  Head Coach Kale Ane related, "we're excited, the kids and coaches and a great crowd tonight. We're happy to be here and have the opportunity to compete in tonight's championship."

The Division I game started off with Kahuku taking the lead 21-0 in the second quarter.  Punahou came back in the third quarter making it 21-7 with 5:51 left on the clock, and struck back again making it 21-14 with 1:10 left in the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter, Kahuku took over the lead 35-14 with 9:40 left on the clock.  Aofaga Wily, #33 (photo above) ran in the final TD, sealing the game for the Red Raiders 42-20.  The Kahuku crowd must have accounted for the majority of the football fans tonight.  All you could see on the Makai side of the stadium was solid "red."  The cheering and support for Kahuku was overwhelming, especially with their red and white towels waving in the air (see video and action photos). Kapolei Hurricanes "vs" Waipahu at Kalaeloa Baseball Field

#44 Kaumana Naki - #10 Skye Kawai Olores-Fernandez - #5 Allen Fo'i
Owner "Kapolei Hurricanes" Troy Fo'i (back row)
I was invited by Head Coach Kaleo Fernandez of the Kapolei Hurricanes to the Kalaeloa (Barber's Point) baseball field for a game between the Kapolei Hurricanes and the Waipahu Big Boys.  I spoke to the owner of the Kapolei Hurricanes, Troy Fo'i (photo above) who told me, "we started this league about 6 years back because our bigger kids couldn't make the weight limit for the Pop Warner.  The league started off with Father John back in Maile and this other team in Kahuku, originally with only 3 teams, and it kind of developed into 3 organizations, the Hawaii Pacific League Big Boys, Hawaii Junior Prep Big Boys, and now this is the Hawaii Elite Pacific Big Boys."

Head Coach Kaleo Fernandez
"Today's game is part of the Hawaii Elite Pacific Big Boys.  This group I got this year are brand new kids who never played football before and I'm just here to help them out to develop their skills for high school level and just to give back to the community.  I've been a coach at Kapolei High School for almost 4 years, helping out Head Coach Darren Hernandez and his staff as the DT/DL JV and Varsity."

"As for the outcome of today's game, main thing to me is to go out there and give it our all and I hope the kids just play their heart out and just have fun!  These kids are not just athletes, they're student athletes first.  I do grade checks and as you can see some of the kids can't play.  I go by the 2.0 GPA ruling and have the support of the parents, and they like this ruling.  I stress education first.  The other coaches for the Kapolei Hurricanes are Head Coach Kaleo Fernandez, asst. coaches Keoki Ka'apana, Allan Kapuniai, Bobby Carillo and Jacob Ramos.  To see today's video and action photos, "click here."

BIIF Division I Champions Kealakehe Waveriders take on OIA Division I Farrington Governors.

Farrington RB #25 Abraham (Amo) Silva

Tonight at the Waveriders Stadium in Kailua Kona, the BIIF Division I Champions, Kealakehe Waveriders (10-1) who defeated Hilo 40-22, take on the OIA Division I Farrington Governors (9-2) who defeated Leilehua 52-26 in the Division I, 2012 First Hawaiian Bank Football Championship First Round.

I spoke to Farrington Governors Head Coach Randy Okimoto prior to the game and he related "We know that they have some big linemen, a big fullback, a speedy quarterback, and some speedy skilled guys so we know that we have to pay attention to these areas of their game and that's what we plan to do. On offensive we do what we do and run the ball as long as we protect the ball and not make too many penalties, that's been our nemeses this year. So if we eliminate this and protect the ball and do what we do on offensive, we'll let the chips fall and see what happens in tonight's game."

As for the Kealakehe Waveriders Head Coach Sam Papalii, "As a team, we would like to continue to play winning football and we're very confident. We know that we are going up against an outstanding football team physically and big like us. Offensively, we like to hang on to the football and ball control. Defensively we want to stop their running game and any play action passes. For our special teams we want to be sound and don't give up any big plays on defensive and in special teams. If we possess the ball and maintain ball control and keep their offensive off the field, then obviously it will give us a better chance because they have an explosive running attack."

Kealakehe #2 Lennox Jones
The game started off with Kealakehe scoring first, 6-0 with 8:28 on the clock. Farrington with their running game, came right back 8-6 in the 1st quarter. It was a battle of the "Titans" on both sides with Kealakehe #2 Lennox Jones with a total of 136 yards for the night.  Jones is a slippery fellow that can move, dodge and weave in and out with his speed and was awesome tonight.  The Waveriders came just within 2 points of the Governors in the 4th quarter, 25-27 with 6:48 on the clock. Three turnovers by Kealakehe sealed the game for the Governors ending the game 34-25.

It was a bruising game, but a well played game on both sides. In game #3, Farrington now moves on to play Kahuku at 7:30pm on Friday, November 16, 2012 and in game #4, Punahou plays Mililani at 4:30pm at the Aloha Stadium. Winners of Game #3 and Game #4 will play for the Championship on Friday November 23, 2012 at 7:00pm. For more stats, "click here." For the action photos, "click here."

2012-2013 Chaminade University Silverswords "vs" D-One Stars

Chaminade Silversword Freshman #3 Sabrina Angle
Head Coach Bobby Keanini
Tonight, the Chaminade University of Honolulu Silverswords 2012-2013 Women's Basketball team started off their season with a game against the D-One Stars at their McCabe Gym. Head Coach Bobby Keanini for the Silverswords had this to say about this year's season, "we have a good returning crop coming back and we're still a small team, but again we shoot the ball well and we have great young ladies that work really hard." "We have returning all conference players, #10 Dianna Zane (Senior) and #21 Jordan Ahakuelo (Junior). They'll be playing a huge part in what we do. We also have three freshmen that will contribute a lot to the program and should get us to the outer bounds of the conference; and we should be working our way back up into contention somewhere in-between the conference. As for the outlook for this year, our ladies work hard and it will be an exciting year to see what we can do and hopefully it comes out in the plus side for us."

Head Coach also mentioned to keep an eye on #50 Rhani Kaneaiakala (Senior), #24 Shana Kawakami (Freshman) and #3 Sabrina Angle (Freshman), who tonight ended up scoring a high of 15 points and the D-One Stars #33 Jamie Smith with 24 points. The D-One Stars ended the game 78-47. "Click here" to see action photos. Stats, "click here."

28th Annual "TOP COP" Law Enforcement-Security Appreciation Awards Luncheon

L/R: Harold Scoggins, Thomas Connor and Jim Frame
Today Hawaii's Law Enforcement celebrated the 28th Annual "Top Cop" Law Enforcement-Security Appreciation Awards Luncheon which was held at the Manoa Grand Ballroom.  It included local, state, federal and private security companies for going beyond the line of duty.  U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka was also honored by the community with a Life-Time Achievement Award for his years in Congress and his support for Law Enforcement on the state and federal level.

Thomas Connor (photo above) was one of the recipients of this award and is pictured with Harold Scoggins, Airport Contract Service Manager - Securitas Security Services USA, Inc.  He is a former HPD Detective who joined HFD in 1975.  Connor retired as a captain in the HFD/Fire Rescue and went through extensive training in emergency response, First Aid, CPR and AED.  Also pictured with Connor, is Jim Frame, Hawaii Law Enforcement Coalition, ASIS International Chapter 134.

On Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at about 0817 hours, Connor who is now a Law Enforcement Officer with Securitas Security Airports Branch - Honolulu was sent to the area of Starbucks near Gate 14 at the Honolulu International Airport on a case involving a male on the ground with a possible heart attack.

Connor who arrived at the scene saw another male performing chest compressions on the downed male and took over from the Good Samaritan with his AED on hand.  AED stands for automated external defibrillator which is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient.

Connor applied the AED pads to the victim, which assessed the victim's condition and upon determination from the AED, a shock was applied to the victim.  Connor then continued chest compressions until arrival of the airport firefighters.  The victim was transported to Tripler Army Medical Center for further treatment.

Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity Football Team "vs" Waipahu Marauders (31-20) "2012 OIA Football First Round Playoff.

WR #3 Donald Lambert "TD" Sealed the Win and Celebration with Head Coach Arnold Martinez

The OIA Football Playoffs First Round has started and the OIA Red East Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity Football team will be playing the OIA Red West Waipahu Marauders at 7:00pm at Moanalua High School. Tonight's winner will move on to play Leilehua. Waipahu has had a bumpy season this year ending with 6 losses and 2 wins, but only losing by an average of 5 points per game. They cannot be underestimated, so you never know what will take place tonight. As for the Moanalua Na Menehune, their season ended with 4 wins and 4 losses, including the most recent loss against Kahuku 15-31 which involved a helmet to helmet hit to Moanalua WR #1 Chad Aragon by a Kahuku player, prompting questions as to the high school football rules.

At tonight's game, you had to be there to believe the "unbelievable."  There were so many penalties against the Na Menehune that I lost count, counting my fingers and toes.  Waipahu was able to take advantage of some of these penalties, but for the Na Menehune it was just "hard luck."  No matter what they did, there were yellow flags flying from all directions, and you could hear the fans yelling "what?" In fact when Waipahu got the flag instead of Moanalua, you could hear a big "THANK YOU!"

In the first quarter, with 5:52 on the clock, Moanalua RB #5 Richard Parham took it in for the 1st TD of the night, and kicker #88 Landon Ogawa made it 7-0.  With 2:08 left on the clock, Waipahu came right back to score with QB #10 Kaimi Paredes diving into the end zone, but the extra point was wide ending the 1st quarter, 7-6.  In the 2nd quarter with 11:15 on the clock, Moanalua kicked a field goal bringing the score to 10-6.  With 1:32 on the clock in the 2nd quarter, Waipahu drove down the field and RB #24 Isaiah Alama ran it in for a TD and QB #10 Kaimi Paredes went for the two points to give Waipahu the lead 14-10.

Oahu Pop Warner WESCON Invitational Golf Tournament - Friday, November 16, 2012

Lillian Napuelua, has been the the Oahu Pop Warner Federation Commissioner for the past 30 years and she was chosen the lead for this Golf Tournament.  The fundraiser is to help Oahu Pop Warner defray the costs for hosting the 2013 Annual Regional Rules Conference.  They are looking for players and sponsors. Individual and/or team sign ups are welcome!

Part of the draw is that the tourney is being held at the beautiful, but challenging, Ernie Ells designed, Hoakalei Country Club.  Also, to keep the tourney from being drawn out, there are only 100 spots open for the day, instead of the usual 144.  That way, everyone can have a great time on an awesome course. If you know of anyone to assist us in either getting the word out or pointing us to people who can help us promote or sponsor this inaugural event!  Any questions, feel free to call Kalei Napuelua at (808) 265-4562 or email her at kalei.napuelua@gmail.com or Lillian Napuelua at (808) 524-9083.

The "Hawaiians" Softball Team at The 2012 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championship

The "HAWAIIANS" Softball Team @ 2012 LVSSA

Aloha from Las Vegas 2012 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championship which is scheduled to take place from Sept. 28 to Oct. 7, 2012. I'm here covering the "Hawaiians" softball team, and had a chance to speak with Coach Moses "Bradda" Neves who took over the team in 1989.  He related that the Hawaiians was started by Rowland Shibasaki back in the 80's. It started out as a bunch of friends wanting to get together and play softball.  Well one thing lead to another and they all started playing together in not only leagues, but in tournaments.

As the years went by and they all got a little older, they started to slow down and not play as much softball as in their younger years, and by that time Rowland had moved to the mainland with his family. Today, the Hawaiians have four teams participating in the Senior World Softball Tournament. They have a Senior Mens 55+ team, Senior Mens 50+ team, a Senior Mens 40+ team and a Senior Womens 40+ team.  Coach "Bradda" Neves said their motto is to "treat everyone as family" and that's what we do. Their wives and families are very supportive, and because of that, most of them are able to do what they love to do and that's to play ball.

Coach Moses "Bradda" Neves and Paul Allan Kim

On Friday, September 28, 2012 at 9:07am at the Lorenzi Park located at 3333 W. Washington Avenue, Las Vegas, the "Hawaiians" played their first game against "Just-4-Fun" from Arizona.  Just-4-Fun took the lead and held the lead over the Hawaiians with their precise hitting into the 5-6 hole to end the game 9-27.  In their second pool play of the day, the "Hawaiians" played against "Git-R-Done from Southern California who kept up with the Hawaiians, but a heartbreak in the last inning ended the game 19-20 in favor of Git-R-Done. The Hawaiians have always done well in previous LVSSA tournaments, but this year in the elimination bracket, they came so close, and yet it wasn't enough to move on to the next round.  I spoke to Coach Neves after the game and he said "just too many errors." It was disappointing, but hopefully we'll see them in Vegas again next year.  Coach Moses "Bradda" Neves presented the World Masters Championship MVP to Paul Allan Kim (photo above).

The Hawaiians team photo, back row (l/r); Herbert Antolin, Bob E. Durington, Pedero J. Gutierrez Jr., Paul Hookano, David Hoopii, Paul Allan Kim, Bernie Lam Ho, Leighton Lim, Howard Manoiki. Front row (l/r); Felixberto Mendiola, Glen Naone, Ralph Okuhara, Ozzie Ortiz, Curtiss Salcur, Ryan Sumida, Rudolfo Valdez Jr. and Coach Moses "Bradda" Neves.   Other teams that participated during the first session 55/60 (Sept.28-30), Big Island Caretakers (55AAA) Hawaii Masters, Family Stones (55AAA), Hawaiians (55AAA), Family Stones (60AAA), Fresh Poke (60AAA),  Nogi's (60AAA) and Makua Alii (60AA). Moanalua Na Menehune Strong Defense Holds Off the McKinley Tigers 42-13

The Na Menehune strong defense held off the McKinley Tigers last night at Moanalua High School for their second win in a row.  Last week, the Na Menehune beat the Kaimuki Bull Dogs, 36-0 after losing to Farrington, 28-7 the previous week.  Moanalua's hard work and determination helped them to take the victory over the McKinley Tigers tonight.

The game started with the Na Menehune kicking off to the Tigers, but a turnover at the 9 yard line turned into a TD when QB #15 Micah Kaneshiro connected with WR #2 Jon-Michael Sharsh (photo above) with 11:15 on the clock.  But hold on to your helmet, within 13 seconds the Tigers came right back when RB #7 Germine Bradley took the kickoff and tied the game 7-7 in the first quarter.

After this eye opener, the Na Menehune took no chances and their defense just pounded away at the Tigers, adding more TDs by RB #20 Kaleo Yanai, WR #3 Donald Lambert (3-TD) and WR #7 Sheldon Pagba to seal the game 42-13.  For stats "click here." For action photos, "click here."

The McKinley Tigers Spook the Na Menehune By Taking the Lead 5-0

It was another exciting game tonight between the McKinley Tigers and the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity girls volleyball.  The Tigers came out from the bush and spooked the Na Menehune by taking the lead 5-0 in the first set.  It looked like it might be a long night for the Na Menehune.  The Tigers had some awesome outside hitters, especially (photo below) OH #27 Allyssa Koki who pounced on the Na Menehune.

The chase was on and the Na Menehune caught up to the Tigers 6-6 in the first set.  The Na Menehune's OH #5 Silerolia Gaogao, OH #8 Anuhea Paiva, OH #11 Johanna Kruize, and MB #15 Analise Austin fired everything they had, along with great blocking up front (photo above) with the rest of the team pulling together for the win, 25-20 and 25-14.  The Moanalua JV finished 25-17 and 25-14, and the Blue finished 25-15 and 25-9.  For tonight action photos, "click" here.

The Governors Awsome Running Game Hurdled Pass The Na Menehune 28-7 at the Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium

Last night at the Roosevelt High School Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium, fans from Moanalua and Farrington filled the stadium over flowing the campus grounds as it was also Farrington's Homecoming. Farrington started the game receiving the kick off, RB #25 Abraham Silva (photo above) did some fancy hurdling past the defense of Moanalua and ended up with 200 plus yards for the night and one
TD.

In the first quarter, the Governors put pressure on QB #15, Micah Kaneshiro whose pass was intercepted by DL #1, Breiden Fehoko who took it in for 6.  The Governors female kicker, Shanelle Atabay Carillo, a senior made it 7-0 with 3:10 left in the 1st quarter.  At the end of the 2nd quarter, the score remained 7-0. The Governors other high scoring player for the night was RB #4, Tyler Taumua whose speed seemed to cut like butter through Moanalua's defense.  He ran for over 140 yards and 2 TDs for the night.  In the 3rd quarter,  after a fake handoff, Moanalua QB #15, Micah Kaneshiro (photo above) took it in for a TD, and kicker #88, Landon Ogawa made it 7-14. Interceptions and penaties stalled the Na Menehune for the night.  The final game score ended 28-7. For stats of the game "click here." For action photos, "click here."

Na Menehune Come Back To Take the Rough Riders After Losing to The Govs 21-25 25-18 13-15

It was a tough night for the Na Menehune Varsity girls volleyball team who played against the Farrington Governors on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the Farrington Gym.  The Governors dominated the game with their power hitting by OH/M #7, Trinity Alualu and M/OH #8, Penina Faumui.  Talk about "pound for pound," you had to be there to see both sides giving it all they had. The Na Menehune lost the first set 21-25, then came back in the second set 25-18, and ultimately lost the third set 13-15.

Tonight at the Moanalua Gym against the Roosevelt Rough Riders, call it what you want, but the game started off a little shaky by the Na Menehune.  The Rough Riders took the lead, but the Na Menehune pulled themselves together, settled down and got back up on their saddle.  They challenged the Rough Riders offensively and defensively and took the game  25-21 and 25-12.  Photo above, OH #5, Silerolla Gaogao.  For more stats "click" here.  Action photos of tonight's game, "click" here.

Moanalua Na Menehune Replacement QB Micah Kaneshiro Takes to the Air.

Parents always ask me why the media doesn't cover the JV football games, only Varsity games.  To give these kids some coverage, for the past 3 years, I have taken an interest in the Big Boys football as well as JV football.  I have found there is a lot of talent out there moving ahead and heading into our public schools.  Last year, one player that grabbed my attention was Micah Kaneshiro (photo above) who played for the Moanalua Na Menehune JV football team.  He is quite a unique person, quiet and a team player.  He was also QB for the JV team, and his style kind of reminded me of Bryant Moniz, always on target and the biggest factor was his leadership and team work.

This year as a Junior on the Moanalua Varsity team, and backup QB #15, Micah said he'll wait his turn and that Maxwell, a senior is a great person and QB.  At the season opener with Mililani leading 24-6 with 6:34 on the clock in the 3rd quarter, starting QB #10, Maxwell Fiatoa was injured and backup QB #15, Micah Kaneshiro took over, ending the game 31-21, Mililani over Moanalua.  Great attempt.

Now as the starting QB, Micah has led the Na Menehune 46-13 over Kailua and 33-12 over the Castle Knights.  The Na Menehune defense dominated the Castle Knights offense and kept the pressure on the Knights QB#1 Brandon Makekau all night.  Moanalua's next game will be against the Farrington Governors who so far has defeated Waianae 37-23, Saint Louis 39-33, Castle 44-3 and Kaimuki 52-0. What a "Knight" for the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity Girls Volleyball Team?

What a "knight" for the Moanalua "Na Menehune" Varsity girls who played the Castle Knights at the Moanalua High School gym. The crowd could be heard throughout the school campus and into the surrounding neighborhood.

The Na Menehune took the first set 25-20, and in the second set, the Knights challenged with blow after blow 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, 21-21, 22-22, finally ending it 22-25 to take the second game.  This took both teams into the play off, the first to reach 15.  It was truly a battle for tonight's game.  The crowd was really into this game, stomping on the bleachers, shouting, yelling and supporting both teams to hang in there!

In the final playoff, Castle scored first, then Moanalua to even the score 3-3.  Moanalua wasn't  about to blink, and held together as a team throughout this tie breaker to pull ahead 9-4. The battle continued with the Knights keeping the Na Menehune on their toes throughout the whole game playing good defense, but it all ended in a heartbreak for the Knights 15-6. Lots of power hitting on both sides.

Awesome game between both teams tonight. As for the Moanalua JV, they too had a scare losing the first game 23-25, taking back the second game 25-16 and pulling off the win 15-10.  Moanalua's Blue team also won 25-12 and 25-12.  Varsity action photos, "click" here. JV & Blue will be added later.

Moanalua "Na Menehune" Surf Over The Kailua Surfriders (46-13)

What a come back for the Moanalua "Na Menehune" Varsity football team after their pre-season games.  From the very start of tonight's game against the Kailua Surfriders, the "Na Menehune" got the attention of their supporters. Kailua started the 1st quarter with a TD by RB#1, Jarrin Young to take the lead 7-0, and Moanalua caught the next wave and tied the score by WR#7, Sheldon Pagba (photo above) to tie the score 7-7 with 4:14 left on the clock in the 1st quarter.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, the Surfriders struck again for their 2nd TD, and again the 'Na Menehune" came right back with RB#4 Ishmil Scott taking it into the end zone to tie it 13-13 with 8:49 on the clock.  Moanalua's offense and defense took advantage of the penalties and interceptions that plagued the Surfriders throughout the night, winning their first game in the OIA Red East 46-13. Other Moanalua players that contributed to tonight's TDs are RB#20, Kaleo Yanai; WR#3, Donald Lambert; WR#2, John-Michael Sharsh "stretching" for his TD (photo above); SS#5, Richard Parham and LB#11 DJ, Leatimua. The Kalani Falcons & Moanalua "Na Menehune" Battle It Out to The End

Last year the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity girls volleyball team placed 5th in the 2011 HHSAA Division I.  Tonight in their 1st game, the Na Menehune put on a show of talent, determination and acrobatic performance beating the Kalani Falcons 25-11 and 25-17, who also put up a great defense.

Going into the second game, the Falcons led 4-0 but the Na Menehune fought back hard and it was a game of who could out pound the other team with kills and blocks.  The Na Menehune OH #7, Jenna Park; DS/L #9, Kassie-Ann Dela Cruz; OH/MB #12, Marina Adolfo (photo above); MB #15, Analise Austin; OH #17, Silerolia Gaogao and OH/MB #18, Johanna Kruise put up a wall to stop the Falcons tonight. What a performance by both teams who played hard all the way to the finish.

As for the earlier game by the Blue Team, The Na Menehune swept the falcons 25-10 and 25-11, and the JV 25-12 and 25-14 over the Falcons. "Click" here to see more action photos.

Iolani 2011 HHSAA State Division II Champions Rematch with The Waipahu Marauders Tonight at Waipahu

Tonight, the Waipahu Marauders and the Iolani Raiders meet face to face again.  The last time they met was at the 2011 First Hawaiian Bank, Division II Football State Championship.  The #2 Marauders made it to the semifinals and defeated #3 Lahainaluna 19-14 and moved on to the Championship on Friday, November 25, 2011 at the Aloha Stadium where the #1 Iolani Raiders dominated the game 34-0 for the HHSAA State Division II Championship Game under Head Coach Wendell Look.  So fasten your seat belt and here we go!

You needed more than a seat belt to hold you down, as excitement rang through Waipahu all night.  The Raiders scored first with a pass from QB #5, Reece Foy to SB #11, Yuuya Kato for a TD in the first quarter.  Waipahu came firing back with QB #10, Kaimi Paredes running in for a TD with 1:57 left in the 1st quarter bringing the score to 7-7.  Going into the 2nd quarter, Waipahu continued their push with REC #4, Dalan Pakau taking it in for another TD.  With seconds left in the 2nd quarter, Waipahu made it 20-14 to end the half.

The game kept everyone on their toes and must have been a scare to Iolani as Waipahu took the lead tonight.  Waipahu kept the pressure on Iolani all night and held the lead 34-27 for most of the 4th quarter.  With 39.8 seconds left, Iolani took over and QB #5, Reece Foy threw a bomb into the end zone.  Then, SB #12, Chad Hanaoka (photo above) ran a pass play for two points to seal the game 34-35.  It was heartbreaking for the Marauders after such a valiant effort, but they have nothing to be ashamed of tonight as Iolani saw a new Waipahu team.  Event action photos, "click" here.

Moanalua 2012 Football Preseason Game with Mililani at Mililani Newly Renovated Football Field (21-31)

Today is the start of a new season for the 2012 Moanalua football team in their preseason game against Mililani at Mililani's newly renovated Kauinana Stadium football field. Last year, Mililani finished 4-6, and 4th in the OIA West Red Division.  Moanalua end their season 5-5 in the OIA East Red Division. This afternoon the Moanalua JV team took on the JV Trojans who dominated the game 35-6. I was told the Moanalua JV team were mostly freshman and sophomores because many of their players from military families left the school.  It was a good experience for the Moanalua team in their first preseason game.  I can see them coming back strong in the regular season games.

As for the Varsity game, Moanalua kicked off to Mililani who fumbled the ball and was recovered by Moanalua. Moanalua put up a great defense ending with a scoreless 1st quarter.  Mililani followed with several TDs bringing the score to 24-0 at the end of the 2nd quarter.  After the half-time, Moanalua came back with RB #4 Ishmil Scott (photo above) running along the outside to take it in for 6 points to end the 3rd quarter.  At the start of the 4th quarter, Moanalua WR #3 Donald Lambert scored a TD with 11:25 left in the 4th, but Mililani QB #15 Jarin Morikawa took it through the middle to score with 5:30 on the clock.  With only a few minutes remaining, Moanalua QB #15 Micah Kaneshiro threw a TD pass to WR #18 Jason Sharsh who ran it into the end zone to close the 4th quarter, 21-31. Great job to all the teams! For the preseason Varsity photos "click" here. For JV photos "click" here.

In Photo from left to right: Bill Dailey (DAFSD), Frank "Mike" Abreu (Deputy FSD), Alfred Dela Cruz (Securitas), Cy Okinaka (AFSD) Photo by TSA

Frank “Mike” Abreu, Deputy FSD along with Bill Dailey, DAFSD and Cy Okinaka, AFSD, presented Alfred Dela Cruz with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Transportation Security Administration along with a beautiful two sided coin (photo below) for his protection of their officers from an irate passenger at one of their check points; and for his quick actions, outstanding professionalism in the performance of his duties.

On Wednesday,  July 18, 2012,  a male passenger going through one of the TSA check points suddenly started yelling, becoming overbearing and uncontrollable. When Alfred Dela Cruz stepped in to assist, the passenger started throwing punches at him.  To protect other passengers as well as TSA personnel at the check point, Al defended himself and with the  help of the TSA STSO Supervisor, Gary Tasoe, both had the passenger under control within minutes until help arrived. “Great team work” to  Alfred Dela Cruz and Gary Tasoe.

Lanikai takes the AAA, Hui Nalu AA and Waimanalo takes the A Division at the Kaneohe Marine Base

The canoe "Mokulua," was built in 1963 by George Perry. Refurbished in 1972 by Phillip Naone and again in 1991/1992 to OHCRA specs and named by George  for the Mokulua island offshore of Lanikai.  Information by LCC
The last race at the Kaneohe Marine Base by The Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Race Association (OHCRA) was back in 1993. Most of the canoe clubs I spoke with were happy to be back at the base. The view from the base looking up at the Koolau mountains, Kaneohe and the Pali is a breathtaking sight, with a crowd of about 4,000 paddlers overwhelming the pier and beach front. Today's event started off with several races that were cancelled at Waimanalo the previous week due to rough seas.  Lanikai won the AAA Division, Hui Nalu, the sponsoring canoe club took the AA Division and Waimanalo, the A Division.  Next week the OHCRA will be holding their Championship on Sunday at Keehi Lagoon starting at 8:00 a.m., and so will the The Na'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a on Saturday. This year, letter carriers throughout the nation collected 70.5 million pounds of food to help provide food to fifty million Americans across the country. Pictured with Bruce McDowell is Mike Kajiwara, Director of Product Donations, Hawaii FoodBank, Inc.

Christopher Jackson, Region 1 National Business Agent just wanted to add that we have to continue to make our company a success by continuing to push Customer Connect, raising the revenue and yes, our first class volume has dropped because of internet and our competitors. Today we have raised over 1.5 billion dollars in Customer Connect and this coming election in November is very important.  We need to elect the leaders who are going to vote for our company to allow us to keep six days delivery, keep our health benefits and our pay that we have now. The Postal Service is making million of dollars. If we were not paying into the pre-funding 5.5 billion dollars a year, we wouldn't be in this situation right now.  All congress need to do is allow us to stop paying into that fund and the Postal Service will get back on track and we can focus and give the service to the american people So don't forget to vote and to all the retirees, god bless and have a nice evening. 47th Annual Makawao Town Independence Day Festival

This year is the 47th Annual Makawao Town Independence Day weekend celebration Festivities started on Thursday, July 5 continuing thru Sunday, July 8, 2012 and includes a Paniolo Parade followed by the 57th annual Rodeo which will be held at the "Oskie Rice Arena which is about a mile up the road off Olinda Road. If you have never seen the parade, it's like the old Hawaiian Cowboy (Paniolo) days. The keiki (children) riding their "stick horses," kick off the start of the parade followed by the Bikers Club, Antique Car parade show, Shriners, Haleakala National Park Rangers, Grand Marshall, Junior Rodeo Queen, Princess, Maui Cheer Babes, Maui Pipe Band, Miss Maui, Maui Extreme, Piiholo Ranch, the Koki Frogs, and ending with the Unicycles.

When the parade ended, mostly everyone headed over to the "Oskie" Rice Arena Maui Roping Club to watch the 57th Annual Rodeo event. If you are contemplating going to next year's event, set your "GPS" to 3674 Baldwin Avenue (Makawao). This is T. Komoda Store & Bakery, one of the oldest and best bakeries on Maui. At this intersection, turn onto Olinda Road and continue about a mile and you'll see Oskie Rice Arena on your left. If you arrive at the Oskie Rice Arena early (7:45 am) enough there is a shuttle to the parade. For me, it was one very long days of Makawao celebration and Rodeo. This was only my second rodeo, and I can't believe I spent much of my time watching where I was stepping ........... Where ever you walked, there were horse droppings like golf balls on a driving range! Yes, inattention could land you in deep "s"?!@#, literally. You know what I mean. I also learned not to stand behind any horses when they pee.

Some of this year's events included the Mixed Team Roping, Wahine and Keiki Barrel Race, Wahine Breakaway Roping, Wahine Steer Undecorating, Century Team Roping, Dally Team Roping, Mugging, Calf Roping, Po'o Wai U, and Bull Bashing. Boy, from my observation, you would think what makes a Paniolo jump off his horse onto running cattle and not use his rope? Well, they seem to enjoy themselves, and the excitement from the crowd gives them that extra challenge. Winning also has a lot to do with their performance and the monetary prizes provide that additional incentive. Congratulations to all that participated. For me, the most enjoyable of the rodeo events was the "Mugging" where one Paniolo chases down and ropes the cattle, and his partner runs from the sideline and tries to tackle the cattle down so the Paniolo can tie off the cattle for the best time. Another favorite was the "Bull Bashing," where the Paniolo tries to hang or stay on the bull for the longest time without falling off. I sure enjoyed myself and it was a great experience. Estelle Kahawaiola'a Halualani Drew 90th Birthday Celebration

Sunday, June 10, 2012 was a beautiful day to celebrate the 90th birthday of Estelle Kahawaiola'a Halualani Drew which was held at the SHOPO Hall (Oahu).  The gathering included many family, friends, classmates, Estelle Ohana and her only living brother Arthur Halualani. Estelle has three children, Randy, Marlene and Elmer Drew (photo above).  There were an estimated 500 people that attended and special guests former Mayor, Mufi Hanneman and OHA Trustee, Haunani Apoliona stopped by to wish Estelle a Happy 90th birthday.

The family traces its history back to a Kohala man, Komomua, and his marriage to a high chiefess of He’eia, Koa’o Moku Moku o He’eia, in the 1800s. Estelle Drew and Loretta Morgan (sisters) are of the Jones line in this family; other clans include the Adams, McCabes, Rowans, Sylvesters, Scotts and Wongs, the Komomua family branching out as men from many places married in. During their childhood much of the extended family lived in the Haiku area, on a single stretch of road. “There was my grandfather and grandmother and all their children. My father bought the property next to that. And so on and so on,” Drew says. “Actually, our family was big enough to be called a tribe,” adds Morgan.
It was a community of small farms growing pigs, chickens, taro and flowers. A stream ran through the land, bringing fresh springwater and a supply of freshwater opae, or crayfish. “Above, we used it for drinking water, below you bathe and wash dishes,” Morgan recalls. Their parents, Solomon and Lillian Jones Halualani, had five boys and three girls, plus one adopted girl. Their grandparents had 20 children, biological and hanai. “Hawaiian-style,” Drew says, start with your own kids, “then you adopt.” The family traces and history information was provided by Estelle Drew and Sister Loretta Morgan (who passed away on April 30, 2010) to Betty Shimabukuro.
