2011 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Half-Time Show By Kumu Hula Tammy Ipolani Silva
On Saturday, December 24, 2011, Southern Mississippi played against the Nevada Wolf Pack at the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl in front of a crowd of about 19,500. It rained in the early morning hours, but at game time it was nice and sunny. Perfect weather for those in attendance. Many people in the stadium were talking about the low attendance and commented that if the University of Hawaii were playing, there would have been a better turn out. The winner of this year's Sheraton Hawaii Bowl was Southern Mississippi who came from behind to take the game 23-17.
At half-time, the mood of the crowd changed amid cheers, and excitement filled the air as 17 halaus filled the stadium field for their performance. I was invited to this event by Kumu Hula Tammy Ipolani Silva (photo above), who is a native Hawaiian, born and raised on O'ahu. She is a life-long student of polynesian dance. At age 4, she studied under Kumu Hula, Ku'ulei Clark of Honolulu. Ipolani studied under her primary Kumu Hula Darrell Ihi'ihilauakea Lupenui for 7 years until his passing in 1987. She then continued her studies under Chinky Mahoe until she relocated to Las Vegas in 1992. Her professional career as a dancer, lead performer, and choreographer included work with the Polynesian Entertainment Productions, Inc., in Las Vegas, Germaine's Luau in Honolulu as cast director, lead dancer, and Hawaiian Hut at the Ala Moana Hotel. She is also the founder and President of Ke'ala Productions, Inc. where she produces a polynesian revue she calls "Polynesia Alive."
This awesome half-time performance took many months of preparation, practice and coordination among all 17 halaus. Ipolani has choreographed and produced this large scale production of 500 plus dancers for the past few years. I was fortunate to have witnessed first hand the work involved, from sewing the outfits to creating the beautiful flowers for the dancers. The State of Hawaii, the Hawaii Visitors Bureau and the Aloha Stadium and its employees should be proud of the love, pride and dedication of these halaus. Thanks to Kumu Hulu, Tammy Ipolani Silva, Wayne & Evelyn Fernandez and the 17 halaus, it was an honor to witness their outstanding performance as a result of all their hard work. The designer for the headpiece (Moanikeala Fia Silva) was created by Mark Magallanes and took 5 hours to assemble. EDDIE AKIO WAIMAKANUI TANAKA JR. “MYSTICAL MOLOKA’I”
On Wednesday, December 21, 2011, I ran into Edward Akio Tanaka Jr. (photo above) here in Honolulu who just completed his first CD release and is from the island of Moloka’i, musical artist, signature sound creates a blend of Moloka’i’s mystical soul, culture, people and aloha for the island. The reposeful music of the album transcends the mind to a musical haven in the same way that mystical forces of nature inspire a sense of fascination.
In his debut album “Mystical Moloka’i”, seven of the eleven songs are written and composed by Eddie himself. “You know how a song reminds you of the past or some where that you’ve been. That’s what music is about to me - reminding you what you felt, or saw at that exact moment when you hear a song. My intent is that the music and songs will touch people’s na’au (one’s heart and mind) and mark times in their lives like they do for me. While writing and playing these songs while I was away in my travels, this is what I have to share about my stories about the past, present and even future of Moloka’i.” says Tanaka
A personal song favorite of Eddie’s family is “ ‘Ama ‘Ama” that tells of a fun time in their home valley and bay when the mullet, an indigenous fish, runs in schools and swims between the reefs creating quite a show. (And then dinner after catching it!) Eddie says he “used the ukulele’s distinct picking in this song to express the fluidity of the fish as they dart back and forth with the ocean’s currents.” It is personal moments like these that filter through Eddie’s songs and paint pictures of exactly what you hear.
The album definitely reflects a diverse sound with each song having been influenced by not only Eddie, but by the mana’o (thoughts) of many musical talents from Hawai’i and the mainstream music scene. Easily gaining fan popularity, “Maui Rainbows” catchy tune was written in 1995 with the help of family friend, Eddie Brigati (The Rascals). “This song pushed me to really write more. We wrote this song just by looking through my home’s picture window staring across at Maui, the afternoon rainbows and the natural beauty that Moloka’i provided for us.” says Tanaka.
With Eddie’s therapeutic voice, soothing guitar rifts, lyrical plays in Hawaiian and English and even some jazz and rock, listeners can expect to hear a musical, mystical rainbow shine through the album, “Mystical Moloka’i”.
Thank you Eddie for the story and especially for your first CD. Your kindness and "Aloha" will put you over the rainbow. The above story by Edward Akio Tanaka Jr., and his press release that came out 2 weeks ago in their home paper Molokai Dispatch.

Las Vegas Super Bowl of Rodeo - National Finals Rodeo "Ye-Ha!"
For the past 26 years, "The Super Bowl of Rodeo," also know as the National Finals Rodeo was held in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Arena which is located on the campus of the University of Nevada. Throughout the Vegas strip, all you could see were cowboys and their 10 gallon hats. The 10 day National Finals Rodeo is held each year in Las Vegas usually the first week in December at the Thomas & Mack Center and is organized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. This year's title sponsor is Wrangler Jeans. The Thomas & Mack Center facility was first opened on September 16, 1983 and is named after E. Parry Thomas and Jerome Mack, two prominent Nevada bankers. Besides the National Finals Rodeo, it also hosts the PBR World Finals and hosts the Los Angeles Lakers pre-season games annually in October.
The facility is "awesome" and the seating is well spaced. Also, the setup is great no matter where you sit, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. To give you an idea on the size of this facility, the capacity for basketball is about 18,800 and arena football is about 17,000. Too bad the facility couldn't hold a football game there instead of at the Sam Boyd stadium, which is so small. The food court prices are like most facilities, kind of pricey. The outside weather was in the low 35-45 degrees. I'm still wondering why they have the finals in December instead of during a warmer time of year. As for this local boy, I think they should move it to Hawaii. To read more about the NFR, National Finials Rodeo and photos, "click here."

USO Athletic Club - Kapolei Islanderz Quarterback #10 Skye Fernandez
While catching a flight out from Honolulu, I ran into coach Ray Maae who is the the owner of the Kapolei Islanderz (USO Athletic Club - Kapolei Islanderz) football team and part of the Hawai State Jr. Prep Sports Association. They were heading to Kauai for a football game and I noticed two girl players. According to coach Maae, the little one is his quarterback #10, Skye Olores-Fernandez from Kauai and the other is his wide receiver #23, Kiara Tiumalu who plays wide receiver, outside linebacker and quarterback too. Wow, go get 'em girls! Coach explained that the new football format is grade based, not weight restricted, giving kids a chance to play and have fun and is similar to the Big Boyz football style based unlimited weight division.
The divisions are split between 5th and 6th graders for the elementary division and has 9 teams. The 7th and 8th graders for the intermediate division has 10 teams. There are two seasons, Spring (Feb-May) and Fall (July-Dec).
I also had an opportunity to meet Kapolei QB, #10 Skye Olores-Fernandez (photo above) and her parents, Evelyn and Kaleo Fernandez (offensive coach). Skye said prior to joining the Kapolei Islanderz, she lived on Kauai and played baseball as a pitcher and 1st baseman for the Waimae Blue Jays. She also played a little soccer for various teams on Kauai, but when she moved to Honolulu, she told her mom she didn't want to play baseball or soccer and wanted to try something different. One day at school, she saw a sign for Kapolei Islanderz football and asked her mom if she could play. Her parents told her as long as she had good grades she could give it a try. At try outs, the coaches were looking for someone with an arm and they noticed Skye had a quick reaction. Today, she is the QB for the Kapolei Islanderz. After today's game against the Lihue Bulldogs (14-32), I was able to witness her quickness as QB and her handoffs.
In her first game against the Waikele Wildcats, she completed 90% of her passes. Her mom, Evelyn and dad, Kaleo said Skye has been an avid sports girl since the age of 4. As soon as Skye was old enough to play, she was registered right away. It seems Skye is not alone in her world of football, because her dad is the team offensive coordinator and her mom is the team mom. Evelyn said Skye really enjoys football and she loves her second ohana, the Kapolei Islanderz.
Coach Maae further related, "as an all-volunteer organization, the hard work of many parents, coaches and board members have been the backbone of the Hawaii State Jr. Prep Sports Association. We believe in being the best youth football organization possible by keeping the interest of the children first and maintaining strong values, which include sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility and commitment." Las Vegas Local Style - Hawaii's Premier Casino Themed Party & Entertainment Company "Just Like Vegas"
Thinking of going to Las Vegas, but the airfare is too expensive? Why fly when you can have fun here on Oahu and the Big Island, and sharpen your skills at the same time. Recently, I attended a friend's wedding and to my amazement, I thought I was in Vegas. They had a layout of roulette tables, blackjack tables and even a crap table. I just had to find out more about this, and met up with Ricky Oshiro (photo above), who is the owner of "Just Like Vegas." I asked him how and why he came up with this idea to bring Las Vegas to Hawaii. He related that his family has always enjoyed going to Vegas and he has learned a lot from Vegas, and also made his share of donations. "At home we've always done it for our friends and family, and primarily we started giving lessons. Then one of my family's friends asked if we could do one of their Christmas parties, so I said, oh yeah we can do that. So we tried to make better tables and one thing led to another, then other people started asking so I decided, yeah why not do this as a real business."
"From the start, it was just home made tables for fun and its always been for fun, we don't do any gambling. We started off with a small 8-foot crap table that we made, then a blackjack table and roulette table. As the years went by, we improved on the design, and we make all of our equipment. As for the years in business, we started about 2004 to now 2011."
I asked Ricky about the legality, and how the laws affect his business. "The gaming law here in Hawaii is pretty simple, there are three elements, consideration, chance and reward. If you have all three, then it is considered gambling in Hawaii. All of these games that we have, like craps, blackjack, let it ride, and pai gau, are all games of chance. So in order not to make it gambling, you have to eliminate either consideration or reward. A person doesn't have to pay to play, if they have to pay to play then you can not give any reward. So you can actually pay, collect money, as a fundraiser, but you can't give out a prize. Or, like most parties, we're just entertainment, so nobody pays, therefore there is no consideration and they only give out prizes." In closing, Ricky related it's a good learning experience if you're not too familiar on how to play. "That's why we do everything just like Vegas. If you've been on our crap tables, we'll even tell you I'm sorry sir, only one hand on the dice. We want them to have the real Vegas experience so when they go to Vegas, they won't get scolding and won't feel shame or be apprehensive about playing. We also give gaming lessons, do poker tournaments, and recently did the Hawaii Big Deal on KHON2. That was our company that provided the poker services." Waipahu Capture 2011 First Hawaiian Bank Football State Champion - Division II Semifinals over Lahainaluna 19-14
On November 4, 2011 at the Aloha Stadium, the Waipahu Marauders played tough football by taking the OIA White Championship over the Pearl City Chargers 9-7. Tonight, at Waipahu High School Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex Stadium, the Marauders are up against Lahainaluna from Maui who defeated Konawaena 23-6 to qualify for tonight's 2011 First Hawaiian Bank Football State Championship - Division II Semifinals. The winner of tonight's game will either play #1 Iolani or #4 Kapaa on November 25, for the 2011 Championship.
As for tonight's game, it was a balance of defense and offense. The feeling was so intense on the field, it was another one of those "don't leave your seat" games. Despite the fumbles and penalties, the Marauders took the advantage in the 1st quarter with 10:11 on the clock to score first by RB #38, Gregorio Alip to make it 7-0. Into the 2nd quarter with 9:31 on the clock, the Lunas #21 BJ Pagdilao-Bala took a hand off to tie the score 7-7. Before you could blink, the Lunas scored again with 7:34 left on the clock. The Marauders QB #13, Drake Yoshioka answered back by firing a rocket up and over to WR #10, Mataio Fualema (photo above) in the end zone for a TD, but the extra point failed and ended the 2nd quarter 13-14.
The Marauders came out in the 3rd quarter, ready to do battle and battle they did, with 7:29 left in the 3rd quarter, RB #38, Gregorio Alip added another TD to the score making it 19-14. Waipahu came back hard hitting with their defense, and pushed and held the Lunas within the red zone by breaking through their offensive line. In the final 11 seconds of the game, the Lunas attempted their last 4 passes and failed, ending the game 19-14. Talk about chicken skin, it was a fight to the end between both teams and a well deserved win for the Marauders.
Prior to the start of the game, I spoke with head coach Eric Keola and asked if his team was prepared for tonight's game against the Lunas. "We have key injured players, but for tonight's game I feel our team is strong and ready." Congratulations to head coach Eric Keola, his asst, coaches and his varsity team who played outstanding defense as well as offense. Good job to the Lunas football team and head coach Garrett Tihada for a great game. For more on the game and stats, "click here." Action photos "click here"

Maui Baldwin Bears Win Big Over The Farrington Governors 28-24
Tonight at the Maui War Memorial Stadium, the #1 MIL Division 1, Maui Baldwin Bears played against the Farrington Governors OIA Red East Division from Honolulu. It was an exciting HHSAA playoff game from start to finish. A treat for supporters of both teams and believe me, no time to get any food or even go to the lua. The game started off with the Governors receiving the kick off and scoring the first TD to take the lead 6-0. Next, the Bears QB #12, Keelan Ewaliko (photo above) faked a pass and ran it in for their 1st TD, and with the extra point made it 7-6. The Maui Bears defense was a pain in the butt for the Governors during the 1st half especially when the Bears covering on a pass to FHS #4, Toma Barrett couldn't hang on to the ball and bounced off his pads into the hands of #49, Timmy Langdrik of the Bears. The Bears offense provided good protection in the 1st half for their QB # 12, Keelan Ewaliko who had all night to pick his receivers, and with 23 seconds left in the 1st half, Bears #23, Kaiana Camvel took one in for a TD to close out the 1st half 14-6.
At the start of the 2nd half, the Governors came out strong with their star running back #21, Tyler Taumua who seemed to be unstoppable and scored his 2nd TD to regain the lead over the Bears 18-14. The Governors defense was hungry and kept pounding away at the Bears offense. With 42 seconds left in the 4th quarter, the Maui Bears QB #12, Keelan Ewaliko clawed his way toward the end zone by dodging, running over players while still keeping his balance like a surfer, and finally with a big leap, he dove into the end zone making the winning TD to end the game 28-24. It was very disappointing for the Governors, but they played their heart out and I must say they never gave up. Hats off to them. Congratulations to all the players and coaches and special recognition to Team Players Maui Bears #30 Justin Cabajar and to Farrington Gov #88 Tyler Milton Liana. Waipahu Marauders OIA White Champions over Pearl City Chargers 9-7
Tonight's OIA White Division Championship Playoff game at Aloha Stadium between the Waipahu Marauders and the Pearl City Chargers got off to a slow start. The real excitement didn't start until the fourth quarter with only minutes left to play, and with Pearl City threatening to score.
The game started off with the Marauders picking off a Chargers pass by #7, Beaver Lagima leading to a 3 point field goal by #31, Jayson Gonsalves to take the lead 3-0. At the end of the 2nd quarter the score remained at 3-0. Fumbles and 7 turnovers didn't make things easier for the Chargers, as well as the Marauders who were penalized for blocking in the back. Into the 3rd quarter, with Waipahu at the 1 yard line, #9 (photo above) at 240 lbs. bulldozed his way into the end zone for a TD, but the extra point hit the left side of the upright and the score stalled at 9-0. The Marauders defense stopped the Chargers all night and Marauder's LB #55, Mark Failauga put a great hit on Charger's QB #10, Kaimi Paredes with 9:37 left in the 4th quarter.
With 2:21 left in the 4th quarter, the Chargers finally got on the score board by SB #8 Shawn Lopez on a hook and ladder play into the end zone making the score 9-7. The Chargers made an undaunted effort to get into field goal range with less than 3 seconds, but ran out of time. Congratulations to Waipahu, the new OIA White Champions and Marauders LB #9, Wesley Nagaseu, who received the Player Impact Award from the Hawaii Army National Guard. Nagaseu caused fumbles and havoc on the game field all night. Congratulations also to the Pearl City Chargers for making it into the OIA White final championship playoff. Leilehua Mules' QB Kenan Sadanaga Shut-Out Moanalua Na Menehune 40-7
On a wet and rain soaked field this past Friday night at Leilehua High School, Leilehua QB #7 Kenan Sadanaga (photo above) who only stands at 5'7", shut down the Moanalua varsity team, ending their season by a final score of 40-7. The Mules move on to face #2 Kahuku this coming Friday at Aloha Stadium. It was heartbreaking for the Na Menehue varsity team including the parents and friends who came out to support the team win or lose. As Coach Martinez told his team, there is no reason to look down, they should all be proud of themselves for a great season, and they all played well.
Moanalua's losses to Kailua 3-7, Kahuku 7-14 and Farrington 24-28 were tough ones, but with their win against Kapolei 30-13 last week, it placed the Na Menehune varsity into the playoffs. There was hope, but Leilehua's overwhelming aerial attack put an end to Moanalua's 2011 football season. At the end of the game, both teams came to the center of the field as one, and a prayer was given, followed by congratulations among all the players and coaches. The camaraderie was very touching, ending a great 2011 football season for the Moanalua Na Menehune in the OIA Red - East division. Moanalua JV also played this past Saturday and lost to Waianae 12-19. More stats "click here." To see the varsity action photos "click here." JV action photos at Waianae "click here."

Kapolei Hurricanes Stopped By The Moanalua Na Menehue 30-13
Tonight amidst a light drizzle, the Kapolei Hurricanes was stopped by the Moanalua Na Menehune defense. The Na Menehune offense also held tough before a sea of blue supporters cheering them on. It has been a rough, but admirable season for Moanalua with losses to Kailua 3-7, Kahuku 7-14 and Farrington 24-28. It was now or never, they did not stop "believing" and was determined tonight to take the win to advance in the OIA playoffs 30-13.
The start of the 3rd quarter still did not stop the Na Menehune whose QB #15, Dillon Turk ran in for a TD and kicker #33, Lee Arakawa made it 20-0 with 8:32 left in the 3rd quarter. Kapolei didn't give up and scored their first of two TD to make it 20-13. It was a scare, but the Na Menehune kept up their momentum with another TD by #17, Donald Lambert who out jumped a Kapolei defender #19 for his first TD to bring the score to 27-13. With only 24 seconds left on clock in the 4th quarter, and the rain coming down, one fan yelled "it was a blessing" as Moanalua's kicker #33, Lee Arakawa sealed the game with a final field goal to end it 30-13. A Scare for the Farrington Governors, 28-24 Against Moanalua Na Menehune
Last week, the Farrington Governors Varsity played against Kahuku at Roosevelt and just sneaked by 14-13. They got another scare tonight, but succeeded in maintaining their #1 spot in the the OIA Red - East Division against the Moanalua Na Menehune at Moanalua. The Governors scored first, but by the end of the 2nd quarter the Na Menehune's SB #1, Christian Akana scored a TD and kicker #33, Lee Arakawa made the extra point to tie the score 7-7. The Na Menehune's OL #70, Chris Lloyd also recovered a fumble in the end zone to take the lead in the 2nd quarter 17-7.

At 17-15 with 11:42 left on the clock, the Governor's DB #22, Leland Mitchell scored another TD to make it 17-21. With minutes left in the 4th quarter, both Moanalua and Farrington would score TDs to end the game 24-28, Farrington Governors. Although it was a disappointing loss for the Na Menehune, they should be proud to have come so close to defeating the first place Farrington Governors.

Kahuku "Victorious" Over Moanalua Na Menehune (14-7)
The talk around town was the Kahuku Varsity football team and their size. But it wasn't their size, nor did they "blow out" the Moanalua football team at Kahuku High School last night at Kahuku's Homecoming and celebration of their 40th Reunion, Class of 1971.
To start off the game, Kahuku's DB #10, Mason Kualii-Moe intercepted Moanalua QB #15, Dillion Turk's pass to WR #8 Marciano Tauvela with 11:51 on the clock in the first quarter.
A few plays later, Kahuku QB #7 Kawehena Johnson scored their first TD and at the end of the first half, led 7-0. In the third quarter with 1:16 left on the clock, Moanalua came back with a surprise from QB #15 Dillion Turk handing off to SB #1 Christian Akana who threw a pass to SB #2 John Michael Sharsh for a TD, and kicker #33 Lee Arakawa drove it high and dead center for the extra point to tie the game 7-7. Throughout the game, both sides had their share of penalties, but time was a factor for the Na Menehue in the end. The final score was 14-7 in favor of Kahuku, who went on to celebrate a happy Red Raider Homecoming.
The Na Menehune challenged Kahuku all night, with great defense from start to finish by both teams. Congratulations to the Kahuku and Moanalua football teams, their coaches and players, and especially to the Kahuku Class of 1971 who were present. Congratulations also to the Kahuku JV team who won 22-20 over the Moanalua JV team. The Moanalua JV, like the Varsity put up a great defense and gave Kahuku a "run for their money." Special thanks to Kahuku Principal, Donna Lindsey and Vice Principal-Athletic Director, Pat Macadangdang for their hospitality. For more information "click here." It was a great night for Lee Arakawa #33, kicker for Moanalua Na Menehune varsity at their Homecoming game, Friday, September 9, 2011 at Moanalua High School against the Kaiser Cougars 46-7. The varsity game started off with a drive by the Na Menehune to the 30 yard line and a field goal by #33 Lee Arakawa (photo above) who drove the ball through the uprights making it 3-0. Yanai who ran in for the TD's and win over the Kaiser Cougars in front of a packed Moanalua HS Homecoming game crowd. The only TD by Kaiser was by QB #15 C. Clivio and kicker #10 M. Nakagawa (WR). Moanalua Varsity "vs" Damien "Pull Off The Game of The Night" on OC16 27-7
What a great game tonight between the Moanalua Na Menehune Varsity team and Damien Monarchs at Moanalua 27-7. Last week, the Moanalua Varsity started off the year with a pre-season game loss against Mililani. It left fans wondering what would happen tonight, but with faith and strong determination they proved that they are back and ready for the new 2011 football season. The Na Menehune will start their first OIA Red East game against Castle on August 26, 2011 at Castle High School. As for tonight's game, Dillion Turk, QB #15 passed (photo above) to Jay Laudato, SB #5 of Moanalua to start off the game with a TD. Moanalua would score two more touchdowns to make the final game score over Damien 27-7. Also, for those who didn't know, tonight's game was televised on OC16, which was a first in Moanalua football history. "Click here" to see more game scores.
Congratulations to coach Arnold Martinez, his coaches and the varsity team for a well played defensive and offensive game. Special recognition of the following players, SB #5 Jay Laudato, SB #2 Jon-Michael Sharsh and LB #44 Hardy Tautolo and to Damien coach Eddie Klaneski, his coaches and the varsity team and especially to QB#10 Alan Mohika. "Click here" to see game photo's.
There was a scare among the players and fans in the third quarter when Damien QB #10, Alan Mohika got hit on an earlier play and collapsed on the sideline. Both teams kneeled and prayed as medical personnel attended to him. Everyone watched in silence, and you could see the concern and emotion on the faces of his teammates. Mohika was eventually taken away by ambulance and it was decided that the teams would finish the game. Our prayers go out to Alan Mohika and his family.

Underdog Farrington Governors "vs" Kamehameha Warriors for the ILH Championship 1965 - 16-6 "WIN."
Today, at Kaiser High School, the Farrington JV (7-12) and Varsity (26-21) football teams played against the Kamehameha Warriors in celebration of Farrington High School's 75th Anniversary. It has been 46 years since the Governors, coached by Tom Kiyosaki played against the Warriors back in 1965 and took the ILH Championship on Thanksgiving Day over Kamehameha 16-6 at the Old Termite Stadium, as it was called back then. If you're not familiar with the location of this stadium, it was located at the corner of King and Isenberg Streets now called the Honolulu Stadium State Park. Tonight, at the Pre-Season kick off, the class of 1966 football team players celebrated tonight's game with a coin toss ceremony along with tonight's team. At the coin toss ceremony on the field were (above photo L/R) Walter Rodrigues (receiver), Stan Cadiente (quarterback), Joe Gomes, Cliff Mookini (blue shirt, back) and Ike Yamada (blue shirt, front). More information "click here"
The Farrington varsity team came through tonight by winning the game over the Warriors 26-21. The Warriors scored first and held the lead into the second quarter. The Governors were determined and tied the game in the second quarter, but the Warriors too came back again and took the lead, but the Governors struck back with a 80 yard kick off return by #23 Lavatai Setefano (Bottom photo) to take the lead, and hold the Warriors off through the 4th quarter down to the last 2 seconds. Congratulations to the Farrington Governors 2011 football team and the 1966 football team! For game information, "click here." For Varsity photos, "click here," for JV photo's, "click here"

2011 Football Season Is Back with A Lot Of New Game Plays and Players
Welcome to the 2011 OIA Football season. We are in for an exciting season in high school football with new coaches and players. I was at the Moanalua JV and Varsity scrimmages on Friday, August 5, 2011 against Kaimuki High School lead by head couch, Clint Onigami. The JV game started at 4:00pm followed by the Varsity at 6:00pm. Families on both sides came out to watch and cheer for both teams as they set out onto the field. It was hard to tell the players apart with just their scrimmage jersey on. From what I could see, the Moanalua JV team looks like they have a promising season ahead of them. They have a new quarterback with good mobility and connection with his receivers as shown above, running for a TD . I won't mention any names of players at this time, but check back because I will be covering more Moanalua High School football games and this week, Friday August 12, 2011 is the Pre-Season game against Mililani. Thank you to Moanalua High School Athletic Director Joel Kawachi and Coach Arnold Martinez for the opportunity to come out to their 2011 season football scrimmage game against Kaimuki. Na O'Hana O Na Hui Wa'a 2011 Championship and Honoree "Aloha Sanborn"
Today, Saturday, July 23, 2011, I attended the Na O'Hana O Na Hui Wa'a Championship Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park. It was also a special day for Aunty Aloha Sanborn who was recognized and honored as someone who has been behind the scene of their racing organization and administration for many years. She served as Hui Wa'a Secretary, Executive Board, Council of Clubs and as a race official (photo above). Today's event kicked off with music provided by the "Ohana 3," with Kanani on the bass, CoCo on the ukulele and Lei on the guitar along with hula dancers. It was truly a beautiful day for the Regatta Championship.
Paddlers arrived early to find their spot and set up for the race. The food concessions were heating up their hibachis, and the aroma of breakfast, coffee, smoked meat and steak was making everyone hungry. I just couldn't pass up the smoked meat plate from aunty "Ray." It was so "ono," that I almost forgot the regatta race was about to start.
I was told that the top 3 on the 'ekahi points will move on to the HCRA State Championship on Saturday August 6, 2011 at Hanakaoo Beach, Maui. Click here for more information if you are planning to head to Maui. Special thanks to Samantha Moikeha, President - Hui Wa'a, George Waikoloa, Race Director and Heather Murakami, Chief Recorder. Koa Kai Canoe Club Dedication of Their New Canoe "Makaihe" at Ke'ehi Lagoon
Today, Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park, the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a held their regatta races. The event club sponsor was "Koa Kai' who started off this event with a blessing of their new canoe "Makaihe" by Pastor Kelekona Bishaw of Real Life Christian Center. Head Coach Paul Amoy (top photo) also participated. President Carolyn Pacheco of the Koa Kai canoe club (photo, bottom right-center) read the following, "Today we are here to bless our new canoe, "Makaihe."
We consider "him" to be the Ku canoe to our Hina canoe, Pahoamokukai. Like the Polynesian Voyaging Society's double-hull canoe, Hokule'a, Makaihe and Pahoamokukai represent the balance of our club's kane and wahine paddlers."
"And, like Pahoamokukai, Makaihe was given its name by our Coach Danette Amoy. When asked what Makaihe means, this is what she shared, "In the chorus portion of "Hawaii Pono'i," we sing the words, "Makua lani e, Kamehameha e, Na kaua e pale, Meka ihe." The translation is: Royal father Kamehameha shall defend in war with spear. "The image of Kamehameha weilding a spear is a strong and vivid one. I wanted that same strength to resonate in our new canoe as it did when we named Pahoamokukai (which is "blade slicing through water").
Therefore, since ihe means "spear"; Makaihe is "spear point." "Also, I like the idea of referencing the point of the spear because it suggests that you are running at the front of the pack. And, since the name will go at the front of the canoe, it also supports the image of the whole canoe being the spear, with the bow being its point."
After the reading, Pastor Kelekona Bishaw asked all the Koa Kai club members to surround the newly blessed Makaihe and all joined hands and a prayer was given, then the race began. "Click" here to see dedication photos candid race and video photo.
Farrington High School Class of 1966 "Reminiscing" 45th Alumni Reunion
Farrington High School Class of 1966 celebrated their 45th Alumni Reunion on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Honolulu Country Club. The theme of this year's event was "Reminiscing." After the registration and reception of guests, there was a silent auction, class picture, and opening remarks by Lindsey Gamiao (photo left, bottom right), followed by grace given by Sam Fujikawa (photo, top far right). The highlight of this event was the Silent Auction which included some items such as a certificate for 2 on Hawaiian Airlines, 14K plumeria pendent and earrings, certificate for 4 to UH vs. Colorado football game, certificate for 4 to UH vs. Pepperdine women's volleyball, certificate for 4 to UH women's basketball WAC home game, UH football tickets for 2 to home game of choice for 2011 and many more great items. Proceeds to benefit the Farrington Alumni & Community Association which awards scholarships and special fund support of various FHS student activities.
The Hawaiian buffet dinner include lau lau, kalua pig, chicken long rice, beef stew, toss and mac salad, poke, fruit platter, desserts, coffee and tea. The musical group, "The Reminiscing" entertained us with oldies of the 50's 60's and 70's followed by Kimo's Karaoke and Dance Music. The music was so loud, many of us were joking around saying that we would all be wearing hearing aids at our next reunion. We ended the night with Farrington's Alma Mater, "To you our dear Alma Mater we pledge our love and loyalty and sing a tribute all together, that all may hear our songs to thee. So let us raise her royal banner and it will hold victorious sway. Then mingle merry hearts and voices, in praise of Farrington." It was nice to see old classmates again and there was also a remembrance of those classmates who have passed on. Overall, it was an enjoyable evening for all that attended.
Special thanks to the FHS Reunion Committee lead by Lindsey Gamiao, Sam Fujikawa, Tom Gushiken, Pauline Bonga Efhan, Stan Cadiente, Cynthia Canales Soto, Jade Ferguson Hind, Blossom De La Cruz Gamiao, Joe Gomes, Jennifer Ikeada Hausler, Ann Kimura Ho, Randall Kusaka, Stewart Lee, Walter Rodrigues, Tom Suekawa, Ellen Tampon, Florence Asis Olayan, Alvina Chock Shimabukuro, Karen Jiminez Simeona, Bibiana Gomez Flazer, Senator Michelle Sakai Kidani, Charlotte Kubota Unten, Liane Mizumoto Wong (photo above) and a big Mahalo Nui Loa to those friends for their generous support and donations.

Sharla Dutro, has a tumor located on the right side of her brain (Oligodendroglioma) that causes her to have seizures and black outs. Carrie "CJ" Pilanca, has tested positive for the BRCA2 (breast cancer 2) genetic mutation. BRCA2 is a tumor suppressor gene and is meant to control the growth of cells in the breast and ovaries. This event is in tribute to all three women and their families. We pray that they will live a long, healthy and successful life. This meaningful event was made aware to me by Bonnie Fermahin member of the "Hui O He'e Nalu (click here) which means "Club of Wave Riders" which was established in 1976.
The Master of Ceremony was the well known Kaleo Pilanca (photo below with Councilman Ernie Martin), aka "KP" the Hip Hop Hawaiian and husband of Carrie "CJ" Kaleo. He is one of Hawaii's funniest comedians and was voted into the 2005 Top 10 Funniest people in Hawaii on Rory Wild's Count Down Hawaii on OC 16 and he was formally on Island 98.5 radio, 102.7 and producer of his own live show. Councilman Ernie Martin also attended today's event and related his experience with a very close friend that had cancer. All, or 100% of today's proceeds will go towards the women's medical expenses. If you would like to make a donation, you may go to any Bank of Hawaii branch and make a payment to "Da Hui Cancer Awareness Day Fund."
The weather was beautiful, a little rain and a beautiful rainbow. There were lots of food booths, raffle and prizes, a silent auction, live music and comedy by Da Bruddahs, Kennyhune, Kaleo Pilanca, Harold the Happy Hawaiian, John Feary, Gregg Hammer Band, Nesian Nine, Natural HI, Sunset Band and so much more. We had a good turn out and support for these three wonderful and beautiful "Huihine," Jasmine, Sharla and CJ. The atmosphere among the crowd at times was silent and some showed their tears. For me, it was very touching because this isn't the first time I covered an event in this type of magnitude. I had the opportunity to meet with these women and they are all beautiful and awesome mothers!
I was also informed of some sad news at today's event. The "Hui O He'e Nalu" members are also honoring Richard Kahihikolo (uncle midnight) who passed away with throat cancer; Kameron Steinhoff who passed away in a skateboarding accident; and Jeff Barbieto, firefighter who drowned while off duty and working for Hukilau Foods on a 120-foot dive. On the brighter side, it was a great event and it teaches us that we should not take life for granted. There are events like this all over our islands which we are unaware until it happens to us, a family member or friend. Thank you to Bonnie Fermahin, Kaleo Pilanca and Carrie "CJ" Pilanca for providing me the information about this event and the Hui O He'e Nalu club. I enjoyed covering this event and my prayers are with you and your families. "Ke Akua Pu A Hui Hou Kakou," God be with you until we meet again. "Click here" to see today's photo.

Waipahu High School "Blue & Gold" Football "Game" with Soccer Player of the Year OIA White "Jahna Tacson" 13-20
On Friday, May 27, 2011, I was informed by Coach Bryson Carvalho, J.V. Head Coach that Waipahu High School "Blue & Gold" Football team for the first time will actually have a "GAME" instead of a controlled scrimmage as they did in the past years. I was also told that they started their spring training at Waipahu a week ago and every OIA school is allotted two weeks of Spring training where the kids are able to put pads on so the coaching staff can take an early look at what talent they have going into summer training. The coaching staff also had a draft and selected players to represent their teams color. The coaching staff was also drafted by the respective head coaches and Bryson Carvalho will be head coach for the Gold team and Abe Villanueva, Health & PE teacher will be head coach for the Blue team tonight.
Coach Carvalho said that they were going to end their Spring tryouts with a huge Spring game and they had every player sell 10 tickets to friends, family and community members to raise money for their spirit packs and workout gear. Tonight's game will include varsity timed 12 minute quarters, OIA officials, kickoffs, kickoff returns, punts, punt returns, and a revamped offense and defense that will include a bunch more passing!
As for the"GAME" at the Home of the Marauders, it started off with no score in the first quarter and with 8:43 left in the second quarter, #2 Mason Corpuz-Slade Blue team intercepted the ball and returned it for 6 points and #11 Jahna Tacson, Waipahu's OIA White (Soccer) Player of the Year (click here) kicked it in for the extra point giving the Blue team the lead 7-0. The Gold team came roaring back with a great pass from QB #13 Drake Yoshida to #7 Matapua Tulafale for a TD, but it was called back. #82 Eric Castro of the Blue team took advantage on an error and ran in for their 2nd touchdown, but the extra point attempt failed which brought their lead to 13-0 with 4:42 left in the 2nd quarter. Finally in the 3rd quarter QB #13 Drake Yoshida of the Gold team threw a bomb to #24 Dalan Pakau and scored their first touchdown, and with Jahna's power kick (photo above), added that extra point to make it 7-13. Both teams battled back and forth in the 4th quarter, but the Gold team's drive and determination to hold off the Blue team with 14.4 seconds left on the clock to take the game 20-13.
The support tonight along with the students, family and the community was awesome, and it felt like the football season had began, especially since the band volunteered to play tonight. With the crowd cheering and shouting, it really felt like a "GAME" even though they played against each other. What I saw was a great team, and I would not take them lightly! Thanks to Stacie Nii, Athletic Director, Varsity Head Coach Eric Keola, J.V Head Coach Bryson Carvalho for the invite and Abe Villanueva, Health and P.E. teacher and the Waipahu High School Football Program and "Congratulation" to all the players tonight. "Awesome playing." Click here. C'mon back later for more the photos.

High Surf Advisory - Oahu South Shore, Hawaii - 5 to 8 feet Expected
The National Weather Service reported High Surf Advisory for Oahu South Shore, 5 to 8 feet expected today, Tuesday May 24, 2011 and through Wednesday. A visit to Point Panic (click here) early this morning wasn't as it was predicted. It looked more like 4-6 feet occasionally. There was a good turn out at Point Panic, but some disappointment among some surfers and bodysurfers who said it was not what they expected. They said the surf may be bigger later this afternoon or Wednesday, and left the area.
I ran into Steve Kapela (click here) from Kailua (photo top left), former 2006 Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic Crown winner at age 43, who stole the Bodysurfing Master at Pipeline from Todd Sells. At 49, he still enjoys his bodysurfing and he also related that it was a little on the small side today, but his love for bodysurfing brought him out here.
I also ran into Paul Shigemura who has been surfing since 1976. His favorite spot is Point Panic and comes out 2-3 times a week and loves knee boarding (photo top right). I also met Tory Eborn from Kaneohe who has been bodysurfing for about 5-6 years and originally started bodysurfing at Sandy Beach, Makapu and Pounders (photo bottom left). Much "mahalo" to Steve, Paul and Tory for taking the time and sharing some of their experience and background with me. Hope Wednesday is a better day for bodysurfing and surfing. More photos, "click here."
